Mine uses a magnet. G/f used to use one for her ***** - but had no end of problems with it and got rid of it having had 2 replacements - just didn't seem to be able to 'read' for the beam and open the catch....

The problem with the magnet one is that the little fob ends up high on the neck as the collar rotates round and the poor bugger gets locked in / out. We had to remove the magnet from our cat flap in the end.

Got to admit to laughing at him at one point - he'd walked into the tunnel to go out (we've put the cat flap through the outside wall) and he was there head butting the flap and not going anywhere. I had to lean in and swing the collar 'round until it released the cat-flap

Ian, get a cat that can handle itself and you wont get any problems from other cats coming in

Don't do it!!! My cat smashes in through her two catflaps between 2 & 4 every bleeding morning miawing away. Wakes me up every night, if I had my way I'd seal it up or have the bl00dy thing shot.

lol, he is good at getting attention!!

soinds like i'm best off getting a standard type cat flap, he's a big bugger and tends to just swat other cats out of the way so i'd be suprised if we have any unwelcome visitors...

scoobydid, i get woken up now with him crying to go out so maybe i'll have to sound proof the cat flap

They dont need to be big to scare off other cats - mine is tiny and she's chases off cats double her size - and that's even if they come in the garden. Most of the local cats only dare to walk along my fence these days rather than risk crossing my garden.

yep, he looks as if he can handle himself, don't worry about a lockable one unless your cat is a wimp.

Only once did we have a cat come in, my one cat went so balistic that I thought someone was being murdered from all the noise that occured.
