LCD or Plasma?
What do you think is the best?
I am looking at getting a new TV in the near future but i'm undecided in which to get, i was looking at either a Panasonic or Samsung 50" Plasma but i have just seen some large (46 & 52") LCD screens by Samsung and Sharp which are 1080p ready and are within a few hundred pounds of the plasma's.
What you say gents
LCD or Plasma.

Would only change it for a projector.
(There's some good threads on AVF about 1080p and how there's different standards and it's not worth the extra costs)

You forgot LCD Rear PRO
By far the best value for money and a better pic than any other Plasma they had in Comet (the one near to me has about 50 plasmas over 40" up to about £5k) and none of them were as clear as mine

DLP rear projection is excellent (Samsung is certainly, some others are ****e). Sony LCD rear projection sets arent anything like as good (although they are big). I used to have one but I now have a Sony 40" LCD.

Don't rush blindly into a 1080p set Compare a decent PDP such as the Panasonic Viera with a 1080p LCD using the same source and make your own mind up. Try to use material other than Disney/Pixar which will favour the artificial colour of LCD's. Also, think about what you'll be playing on it. True 1080 material is hard to get unless you have HD-DVD or BluRay, and mainstream broadcast at 1080 is many, many years away. 1080 PDP's are appearing now, but are pricey (Pioneer 5000EX is £5k+) and those who've done a direct comparison with a 768 HD ready current PDP say there isn't much difference from normal viewing distances. Also, try to view in a well lit room as well as darkened, and make sure you view something with fast moving images as you might not like what happens to LCD's with fast pan shots (such as the camera following the ball from a goal-kick, pea soup). Ultimately, it's up to your eyes. Most serious AV fanatics go PDP, if they don't have projectors anyway.
My own preference is for PDP as I have just bought a Panasonic TH50PX60 Viera. These can be had for around £1500 now CLICKY but the best thing to do is get John Lewis to price-match to get both the best price AND their standard 5yr warranty (essential with any PDP or LCD).

I didnt mean the rear projection television, I meant a standalone projector.
when an lcd or plasma television comes to the end of its life its gone. with a projector, you replace the bulb.
also you dont lose the space as you do with a conventional television, and you can have a very visible screen right upto 120".

Which? magazine did a review of LCD and Plasma TVs a couple of months back. They concluded that below 37" LCD was better and above 37" Plasma was better for outright screen and picture quality.
Hope that helps!

Whats your budget?
If you want a big TV (50" ish), get a Plasma. IMHO the 3 you should look at are the Panasonic, the Pioneer, and the Fujitsu.
I personally have a 50" XDE pioneer and cant fault it. Side by side in a showroom with a panny i prefer the pioneer pic but its close.
The pioneer is a beautiful screen though - here is mine, Not the best pics but you get the jist. I also have a Sony Bravia 32" LCD and the plasma pic is a fair bit better.
Shaggy 1973, not sure i am loosing much space here?

Projector isn't a viable option for me at the moment which is why i was looking for a 50" screen, I can get the Panasonic for just over 2500 euros which when roughly converted (at 1.5-1) is about 1680 pounds!
The Sharp LCD is 52" and would cost just over 2500 pounds!
I can't really do an A/B test because the shops out here in Germany arn't set up for that sort of thing and i have no idea where the specialists are?
Cheers for the opinions though, keep em comming

What is a projector like for general viewing? (sorry to take this slightly OT).
I have a Viera, which is excellent, but will be looking at a projector when I decide to change, what sort of size can you go to? as in similar to a 50" telly etc, and also what abot when the room is quite bright, is the picture as visable as it is with a telly?
As far as plasma vs LCD, I beive in the size you are looking at you'll get better value for money with a good Plasma, as an LCD that size of the same quality as a similar sized Plasma will cost a lot more.

agreed about the minefield comment.
AV Forums - what a grumpy bunch of pretentious w@nkers. Sorry. With exception of a couple of helpful posters, I've NEVER been on such an unhelpful forum
Granted, there is a WEALTH of information on there, but with a fair few of the important subjects 100's of pages long, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack
I've been looking for a 37" LCD, and after 10 hours researching yesterday, my mood went from to by the end of it. Feeling quite despondant about the whole thing tbh.
What would be nice is a Top10 of recommended panels in each size/LCD/plasma.......
In my limited opinion, I would go for LCD on smaller panels, and Plasma on bigger stuff......

GC8 & Abdabz,
Rather than sitting there on your high horses (you OBVIOUSLY have the knowledge about this stuff), why not post a constructive comment and help us ill-informed, nonsense posters then......

Certainly an option if you are not hanging on the wall.

For what it is worth - I researched this recently and subscribed to Which.
The Panasonic Viera range (Plasma) comes out top.
So that's what I got - Paid £1300 for the 37 inch from John Lewis (comes with 5 year warranty) also got a trick wall mounting kit that let's you twist / turn / pull out / push back etc.
Said it before
Say it again
You get what you pay for.
Went to a party the other week - they had a BUSH flat panel tv. TBH the picture quality looked as if someone had wiped a layer of sump oil over the screen - It would have laster less than a day in my house before finding my foot planted firmly through the screen. (Not a large cost as it was cheap as chips)
