Its called a GroupSaver, basically if you have 3 or 4 people travelling then you only pay for 2, and any kids you have on top of the group travel for a £1 return. It is usually available after 9-9:30am on weekdays and anytime on weekends. Most train companies accept these tickets with the exception of virgin trains(maybe others the booking office could tell you about!).
The ticket types it is available on are Cheap Day singles/returns and Saver single/returns. It is important to note that these tickets are only valid when the group are travelling as a group. So if you go into town together and then split up on the way back then you will need to buy new tickets as you are no longer in a group.
There are other terms and conditions on these but they are specific to particular journeys to certain destinations, but the above mentioned hopefully answer your query.

Depends on the journey, 4 adults and 2 kids for example can go from leicester to birmingham for £17 return. In the car it would cost more than that in just fuel, plus you got the parking on top and wear and tear.
Alot of the people who normally use these tickets are going for a night out on fridays and saturdays, it means they can all drink and avoid drink driving.
