Default The Bible

Was having a look around the bookshop the other day searching for childrens books that explain the various things about Xmas - Santa, Jesus etc and came across this

Amazon.co.uk: Children's Illustrated Bible: Books: Selina Hastings,Eric Thomas

I started having a look through and it turned out to be a fantastic little book. Very informative and amazing how much history and information is in there. I used to remember the stories as a child and they are certainly as good as Aesops fables or some of the Greek literature.

I certainly don't understand how people can suddenly become religious by reading the bible though. It's full of incest, murder, totally unbelieveable stories, polygamy, animal sacrifice, unjustified deaths, God's petulance, favouritism for the Israelites, contradictions and it also indicates that there are other Gods.

Take one example of Moses, the Pharoah and the ensuing plagues because the pharoah wouldn't let the Israelites go. Why was the Pharoah so powerful that he could stand up to God? Why didn't God just kill the Pharoah instead of killing all the animals and the first born child of every family. What kind of evil being would do this?

I should think in this discriminatory world we live in, you've offended people with the title alone.

Actually reading the bible rather than having it preached usually has the opposite effect

How about the women, they have one less rib? Err, but they don't really?

And the snake; you have made Eve taste the apple, therefore you shall crawl on your belly for all of time!! Oh no, and I was just about to fly away

Sounds more like Eastenders, and that doesnt cause religous fervour, just depression and acceptance that Britain is now a bit of a turd.

It sounds like it was just being true to life as practised by humans throughout time.

If God was so PC as to make life such that nothing bad could ever happen to everyone and we all had perfect lives, we would all be committing suicide because there was no goal to try to achieve. Human nature is like that.

So for reasons of impartiality, the Torah and Koran are next on your kid's booklist then ?

Dostoevsky spent most of his life pondering it, but Les just goes BAM! and sorts it in one paragraph!

Not so, a perfect omnipotent god could quite easily create a perfect race who are happy being perfect, it's becuase the creator was as potent as religions like to claim or that were here because of random chance that human nature is as fickle as it is.

No need, the Bible is the big Daddy of them all.

The Torah is actually composed of the first 5 books of the Old Testament, also known as the Holy Pentateuch.

The Koran is loosely based on the Bible but with the Mohommeds stuff included as well.

It does, but there is nothing whatsoever that is attractive or nice about the God presented in the Old Testament.

The New Testament, however, is where all the love and peace comes into it.

The Bible comes in the middle, the Torah first, then the bible then the Koran in terms of date.

Christmas has very little to do with the Bible and indeed Christianity. It is however a nice time of the year with everyone in festive frame of mind.
