How do you work that out then? 4.56 litres in a gallon, so a 1.5p/litre increase = 6.84p increase.

Pre-Budget report: point-by-point
The main points from Chancellor Gordon Brown's pre-Budget speech in the House of Commons:

Mr Brown said the government's aim was to "unleash" the economy.

Economic growth this year is expected to be 2.75%, rising to between 2.75% and 3% next year, he added.

By mid-2007 Mr Brown said he expected inflation to be at its 2% target.

More than 16 million people have
tax-free ISA accounts.

Britain will meet both its fiscal rules in this economic cycle and the next.

China and other economies were competing on skilled workers, so the UK's had to "out-innovate" competitors.

The "new priority" was "world-leading" investments in areas such as transport and education, Mr Brown said.

The minimum wage is now £5.35 an hour and in January penalties for failing to pay it would rise, Mr Brown said.

By 2020, 90% of adults should achieve five GCSEs or equivalent, he added.

The government will consult on £2,000 bursaries to encourage young people from poorer backgrounds to go to university.

In April, benefit payments for the poorest children will rise to £64 a week.

Basic state pension to rise 3.6% in April and pension credit minimum guarantee to rise £5 for single people and £7.65 for couples.

The normal budget period for funding voluntary and other groups will rise from one year to three years.

Councils will get £30m to encourage community ownership of community assets.

From next year, most carbon-zero homes will be exempt from stamp duty.

From February, air passenger duty will rise from £5 to £10 for longer flights.

There will be an inflation rise in fuel duty from midnight.

Quick, give GB a call and let him know you're happy to pay more

Worrying to see some people are taken in by Labour's illusion of a booming, healthy economy...

Will I get points for my working out Pete?

4.545 Litres x 1.5p = 6.82p x 1.175 = 8.01p per gallon.

Isn't the 1.5p/ltr just duty, you then need to add 17.5% VAT which means its going up 1.7625p/Ltr @ 4.545 ltr/gallon = 8.01p/gallon increase

Certain. You always pay VAT on top of Duty. This applies to Import Duty too, so a car imported from Japan attracts Duty @ 10% on its cost, all fees and all transport costs and then VAT @ 17.5% is added.

Its a lark isnt it?

8p a gallon lol

so if you do 20K miles a year and get 25mpg, that's 64 quid a year more.

not a lot really.

If i don't have lunch for 4 days, I'll have recouped that lol

I guess it's more of a principle thing tho, so I'm with you all on that one.
