Default Gordon Brown set to raise fuel duty again

From todays Telegraph

Motorists face a rise in petrol prices today as the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, demonstrates his green credentials in his final pre-Budget statement.
He is preparing to announce the first fuel duty rise for three years, returning to the policy of raising tax on petrol and diesel in line with inflation.
A rise in line with inflation would add 5.68p a gallon - 1.25p a litre to unleaded, or 6.68p a gallon -1.47p a litre with VATDuties have been frozen since October 2003 because of oil market volatility, which pushed unleaded petrol close to the £1-a-litre barrier (£4.54 a gallon) in the summer.
The price peaked at 98.54p a litre (£4.48 a gallon) but has since fallen back to 86.17p a litre (£3.92). Average diesel price is 91.69p a litre (£4.17).
Mr Brown continued the freeze in his Budget last March and extended it in July, saying he would review the position in the pre-Budget report.
Raising duties in line with inflation would add 5.68p a gallon (1.25p a litre) to unleaded, or 6.68p a gallon (1.47p a litre) with VAT. The increase would also apply to diesel. Treasury sources last night ruled out "sweeping" new green taxes or a return to the previous policy of the fuel duty "escalator" which raised duty above inflation and gave Britain some of the highest petrol and diesel prices in Europe.
But they indicated that the recent stabilisation of oil prices and the need to take action to curb pollution justified ending the fuel duty freeze and taking a modest step towards raising the cost of motoring.
Mr Brown abolished the "escalator" in summer 1999 - before the widespread fuel protests over the cost of petrol and diesel, which led to blockades outside refineries and long queues at the pumps.
They really don't know when to stop do they

It would appear that the revenue that will be lost from tax on cigarettes as everyone quits next July will be made up from tax on petrol

So what are they doing with all that money they're making on selling off the old middle schools?!?!

Kids are obese, must be McDonalds fault, got nothing to do with the fact PE is now optional in most schools and competitive sports have been banned from those that still do PE....

Hiding behind the schools is just an emotional blackmail and designed to keep people quiet as who would dare question the future of our nations kiddies! In fact we should all use our cars more so our kids have a better future!

It's so ******* depressing, yet so ******* predictable.

We said before on this site just a couple months ago, when petrol costs at the pumps started falling. The Government would say fuel is at an all time low so raising fuel duty is an acceptable tax.
They fail to remind us that since Labour came to power Petrol is the highest it's every been under a Government.

Just wait for the next few years. The Government are constantly talking about road pricing. Convincing the British public that this is the way forward. We all moan and groan, and maybe knick up a Law abiding stink (we really should take a leaf out of the French book and blockade). We will then be told that instead of paying per mile, the Government will just raise fuel duty and we'll be better off this way.

We'll all probably thank them too.

Have to say, I wouldn't bat an eyelid if some terrorist bumped off Blair and Brown.

Problem is, there is no alternative. The LibDems will tax the driver even more. And the Tories are trying to be the Greenest of the mainstream parties. No matter who is in charge, the motorists faces rising costs, year on year.

Well if they wanted to be 'green' there are far more measures they could take. Limit engine sizes for one. There is no need for anybody to drive a car with a 4l V8. the problem is if they actually cut fuel usage then they lose cash which is ultimately all they're bothered about. All they do is hide behind an issue to keep the general public quiet.

Road pricing WILL come in because it is part of a European Union directive EC2004/52 Not that this is ever reported in the news - if you dont want it you would have to leave the European Union - and that means you will have to vote for UKIP. They are getting my vote!

Of course he doesn't! the tax payer does as he has a company car,and as he works for the company that all your tax money goes to it stands to reason that tax money pays for his wages and petrol.

Or move to France, they're pretty good at ignoring EU legislation, usually stuff they proposed in the first place.

Not true, read the letter at the above site, paragraph 4:

It finishes:"The Directive does not require member states to introduce tolling arrangements, nor does it require that they should be electronic. But where member states choose to do this they must comply with the Directive"

So ALL that directive is about, is STANDARDISING any electronic tolling system so that ALL memeber states can use it.

Green tax's, curbing pollution

How is taxing to death 1% of the globes population going to make any difference to overall climate change. Do they really think people are so thick not to see straight through all these so called "green" measures. Just more dishonesty on another level.

Tax the motorist? Oh yes its just so damn easy. They try and make out that cutting motoring down will make a huge green difference, its just not true.

We just have to accept that they do not give a stuff for the electorate or for this country. We are being used for their personal ambitions. They hate the middle classes so they are hammering them as hard as they can. Eventually we can expect them to hand this country over to the Eu in exchange for special consideration for their own careers. By then we will have effectively lost any of the power that our vote gives us.

Tony Blair called Gordon Brown into his office one day and said, "Gordon, I have a great idea! We are going to go all out to win back Middle England".

"Good idea PM, how will we go about it?" said Brown.

"Well' said Blair "we'll get ourselves two of those long Barbour coats, some proper wellies a stick and a flat cap, oh and a Labrador. Then we'll really look the part. We'll go to a nice old country pub, in Much Something or other or one of those villages and we'll show we really Enjoy the Countryside"

"Right PM" said Brown.

So a few days later, all kitted out and with the requisite Labrador at heel, they set off from London in a westerly direction. Eventually they arrived at just the place they were looking for and found a lovely country pub and, with the dog, went in and up to the bar.

"Good evening Landlord, may we have two pints of your best ale, from the wood" said Blair.

"Good evening Prime Minister" said the landlord, "two pints of best it is, coming up"

Blair and Brown stood leaning on the bar drinking their beer and chatting, nodding now and again to those who came into the bar for a drink.

The dog lay quietly at their feet. All of a sudden, the door from the adjacent bar opened and in came a grizzled old shepherd, complete with crook.

He walked up to the Labrador, lifted its tail and looked underneath, shrugged his shoulders and walked back to the other bar.

A few moments later, in came another old shepherd with his crook. He walked up to the dog, lifted its tail, looked underneath, scratched his head and went back to the other bar.

Over the course of the next hour or so another four or five shepherds came in, lifted the dog's tail and went away looking puzzled.

Eventually Blair and Brown could stand it no longer and called the barman over.

"Tell me" said Blair, "why did all those old shepherds come in and look under the dog's tail like that? Is it an old custom?"

"Good Lord no," said the barman. "Its just that someone has told them that there was a Labrador in this bar with two a*seholes".

This really is one of my pet hates...had an interesting conversation with someone who drives a 406 diesel and he said oh its 'people like you' who ruin the environment with your high carbon emitting sports cars...

Ok I said let's examine the facts...I drive 4k miles a year in my scoob at 220g per km...he drives 16k to work in his diesel at 145g per km, who does more carbon damage and who creates more traffic problems and infrastructure strain? I think a majority of scooby owners do very little mileage aswell they either have it as an occasional w/e car and use a very economical vehicle for work or like me have the luxury (torture) of using public transport for work.

Government has made us all car dependent :-

Encouraged out of town shopping centres Bluewater etc
Allowed supermarkets to grow so large local shops are closed down.
School standards not good enough, forcing parents to drive kids to better schools further away.
Hospitals closed down and move centrally into super hospitals now forcing even more car useage.
Companies sucked into town/city centres forcing commuting at ever higher levels, with a public transport system that cant cope.
Not encouraging work from home technology for office workers by giving employer incentives.

My god the list is endless all the above are direct reasons why we all depend on cars and petrol, all managed by goverment, then when they have you, they tax you. There is nothing green about this, it is simple revenue generation and its all down to HM Govnt. If they were really serious about green issues address the things that force us to use cars and that way you will address the useage of them.

Bizarre coincidence - or all part of the grand plan to extract as much money as possible from all of us?

Ask the moron if you're supposed to feel guilty when considering the amount of pollution China and India are pumping out and that a single cow will produce many fold more green houses gases than your car ever will. Also mention to him that the emissions of his diesel are far worse to human health and it's 'people like him' that are causing so many poor little children with asthma these days all for the sake of a few mpg.

The typical forest fire (happens all the time) will release more carbon into the atmosphere than every single UK motorist put togehter for an entire year.

Don't let this government brainwash you!!!

sad thing is that the big G has us all where they want us. Cars are essential in our lives, ok we here can say scoobs are a luxury i suppose, but excluding that its a fund raiser as far as the enviroment is concerned there is so much more that could be done but isnt. Biggest contributor dont forget in this country is governement itself. I wonder how many lightbulbs in use at every council building, civil service building and govt office use long life low energy bulbs? Are all their pcs turned off each night or left on standby.

I go past my council office with all the lights on at 1am so lets see who is the biggest pollutor be quite interesting.
