Road Charging Petition
From Pepipoo.com ...
The government’s proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.
The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver.
A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.
On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit you can expect an NIP with your monthly bill.
If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website:

Supply and fit 20,000,000+ of these devices. Create and maintain a computer system to administer them. With this goverments track record with computer systems. I think disaster would be an understatement, it'll never work but it will cost us taxpayers yet another fortune.
PS voted anyway.

I'm getting increasingly hateful of how, over the last nine years, this country has descended into a pious culture of national and governmental interference - what with the build up of the 'speed camera industry', dangerous road chicanes, humps and other distractions, and now this road charging concept and the spectre of VED road tax charges probably going up.
What I want to see is less restrictions, no speed humps anywhere and in some cases a sensible relaxation of speed limits in non-urban areas. At the same time, we need a lot more genuine traffic police to dispense advance driving advice to normally sensible drivers who are maybe speeding a bit - but their main energy is in tracking down and putting drivers off the road who have no tax/insurance/valid driving licence -or are driving dangerously, stupidly or aggressively, such as those who persistently tail-gate or stay in the middle-lane.
I say - by all means target and hit the criminal and willfully dangerous element of society - but don't make a criminal out of me.

If they use it to stop the school run, I'm all for it.

This ia all much too sensible and radical an idea for the government to take in. I mean, where in what you suggest, does all the money come from ..???
Dave
PS: yes, I do agree with what you say ...

Petrol vat and duty would remain the same and if the price of fuel went down the tax would be increased to leave petrol at the same price and we pay the extra tax. This is one of the "star" Milibrand's ideas for a "green tax".

I very much doubt is could be used for speed check TBH. Given the complexity of continually tracking milllions of cars, and the government's ineptitude with all things computer-related. It would also need to stand up in cought, and prove who was drivng etc.
I can't help thinking this is like the time F1 said they would introduce a scheme where drivers changed team every race. Obviously this was unworkable, but it made their other suggestions look more palitable.
Signed anyway!

The non-insured driver problem is quite easy to fix - Have a state insurance scheme as in Australia, this covers you for third party liability, and you can top it up to fully comp with private insurance if you so wish. Thereofore no more uninsured driviers pushing up premiums.
Road tax can and should be done away with completely by adding a couple of pence onto fuel duty.
Same applies to any road pricing, just stick it on fuel - job done.

Don't think things haven't been underway on this for a long time. It looks like it will be coming, probably on the back of insurance, and no box = no insurance
Insurer opens up pay-per-drive - Computing
I've signed the petition anyway, can't just roll over and die on this....
