Default Help needed - CCTV

Quick straw poll required before my missus sections me. I have cctv around the house (external) and my missus thinks i'm bizarre for doing so, "we're not a warehouse, big brother etc. etc." you know the score. I keep telling her it's not actually that uncommon to have domestic cctv these days hence my poll.

Help please!

Depends what you are CCTVing I guess. I'm tempted to put one on the garage as it is quite a way from the house and can't see what is going on round the front, but to have the house dripping in them unless you're a rock star with a stalker seems a little OTT.

I have 4 colour cameras with I/R and Nightvision on an 8 way DVR, so when the garage goes up, I can add more cameras. I can safely monitor activity in the event of a break-in to get it back whatever goes missing. Had it put up after 2 cars had Nitromors over them.

Secure access can be had from anywhere in the world via a PC if I wanted to set it up (very easily) Makes you feel that you are taking precautions to a safer life with all the goings on in our world.

HTH

I have 4 cameras on a DS2 dvr and after a while you forget its there.

Its just good to have something incase anything does happen.

Its the norm now a days.

Thanks for the replies and voting everyone .

General consensus of the replies seems to be basically as I see it. I’d rather I’d done something that may either deter or help in the event of anything untoward happening to my family or possessions than do nothing, which these days I don’t think you can afford to do personally (sad as that is ).

Only you can answer. If you live on a gated estate with armed guards, you don't need it. If you've had six break-ins in your street in the last month, you do. Not for us to say.

It wasn't so much a question more or a conformation that domestic cctv (anything from 1 camera on your front door to more expansive system) isn't that uncommon.

Sadly it was no help (but thanks anyway), as despite the voting my missus reckons the ppl who have replied and voted aren't a fair cross section of the public, women!!!

Me too - 10 cameras, 2 IR illuminators and a 16 channel Geovision card. Also all are modulated & distributed to every TV in the house.

Sounds a very nice setup, what fps per channel are you getting (+ res)?

Have been thinking about it, but seeing as neither of our cars even have alarms, its probably overkill.

I dont know if I still have the movie from my parents place. You can see two little scummers sneak up to the the front door in the small hours as clear as day (IR illumination) probably going letter box fishing or just testing the locks. They trip the PIR at the front of the house and the outside lights brighten up leaving them in practical daylight looking like two rabbits caught in headlights They turn tail and legged it, it was worth the money just for that one stopped incident.

I have one of these - 25fps @ 640x480. I also hace a band pass filter on the aerial & a bank of 10 modulators into a tv distribution amp.

The Geovision software is really neat - records continuously or on picture change and when playing back a clip you can run multiple camera views concurrently.

I run all mine to a PC in the garage - my garage links into the house loft space - so that it's easy to cable. I then use Remote Desktop to access it from somewhere warmer

Very nice. Do like the Geovision stuff but talking serious money but then it's a serious bit of kit .
