Default Given up smoking

Now into my 7th week no patches no gum just plain willpower, and well pleased with myself.
Been a 20 plus a dayer for a long time, well over 20years and yeah the "stupid" comments will be no doubt added to this

So the question is....

Have now started coughing so bad in the morning I'm puking but nothing is coming up, is this a "clear out" of my lungs and how long will it go on for?

D-day for me is tomorrow. Fed up of spending shed loads on smokes and my health could do with a boost. Fed up with colds lasting weeks instead of days.

I had that for about 6 months - after that I felt Fan Frikkin Tastic.
Food tasted better than I could ever remember - trouble is I bloated up by 4 stone !!

You may find you are just coming down with a cold and you are blaming quitting.

There are good and there are bad days, but either way you don't smoke. Keep up the good work.

The coughing thing can last for absolutely ages...and I have no idea why. I seemed to catch every virus and cold that went around for a good 6 months. Even now, 18 months as a non smoker, I sometimes still seem to cough *like a smoker* when I get up in the morning. My guess is, there's a whole load of stuff to clear out of my lungs before I'm *free*.

Only thing to say to you is.........well done, keep going, and check it out with your GP if you want a proper answer

When you smoke the hairs inside your lungs that ferry out the particles etc stop working. When you quit they start working again hence why you cough up a whole load of stuff because these minute hairs grow back. At least your regaining lost lung capacity in effect.

I smoke over 20 a day and have done for several years. I really need to quit and have done in the past for months at a time but find myself back on them for various reasons... planning to quit on 1st of December - hopefully for good this time.

Sounds like you've got flu

Congrats on giving up, I've been off cigars now for 1 year, birthday today
Gave up to afford my car and it's extra running costs over my old scooby
I've spent more on petrol in the last year than I would of on smoking, but worth every damn penny, and I've travelled a bit this year too!

Never ever going to start again either, that's me done for good

Well done on giving up. You should be coughing up some interesting black stuff in the mornings now.
Been stopped for 3 years now. Used to smoke 20 small cigars a day and inhaled. Lungs are great but I became a fat git

Question A question for those who have quit.

Well done to Beamer and the rest that have quit......keep it up

I am very jealous as I am a 20 a day person and want to give up too.

I have given up in the past (only for a month or so a couple of times) and always found it most difficut when driving, or after a meal.

Apologies for the hijack but when was it most difficult for you all?

Thanks

SPG

Good news on the no smoking, got to be the right thing. My kids grew up without any grandparents, they all died early of smoking related illnesses.
See your Doc about the coughing he may be able to help. And yes smokers do smell, but they dont know .............

Well done Beamer, its a hard business to succeed at as I know only too well, but so worth it when you manage to kick for good.

The coughing is normal, it is only your tubes clearing themselves of the deposits and it will eventually die down.

Stick with it

Thumbs up

I'm a year today, smoking not mental age..... although , and it's the best thing I've ever done......

Went cold turkey, no patches or gum... waste of time IMHO, and after the first week it became easier and easier.......

I'll NEVER go back to smoking and am looking forward to the total smoking ban next year so I can come home from a night out without feeling the need to shower before bed due to stinking of smoke......

To all the ex-smokers and those TRYING to give up... I salute you

I'm on 3 weeks now. No gum / patches or anything

My epoque moment came when I was buying some oil for my car. I was looking through the various options and ended up buying the most expensive 'cos I wanted my engine to have the best protection available.

As I was leaving the shop I thought how ridiculous it was that I was so concerned about the state of my motor and was happily sitting there paying money to destroy the one and only set of breathing apparatus I have

In my opinion, any smoker who says he wants to quit but cant doesnt really want to quit.
Ive been a non smoker for 6 months now and found it very easy to quit once I actually quit.
I would always say i wanted to quit and would set dates that got further and further away until one day I just didnt buy any cigs and never did again.

Most difficult time for me was about 6 weeks. Up til then I had loads of support from friends/family and when that started to dwindle off, I felt very much *on my own*. I missed the pats on the back and the feel-good factor and the smugness of giving up. It was then that I needed support much more than any other time. I was lucky and I got the support to keep me going.........never looked back

It's actually easier when you can identify your weak moments (after a meal or with a drink) because you can conciously give yourself a diversion...and the moment passes.

Good luck .....everyone is capable of doing this
