Have I caught something?
Is there anywhere on this site that explains these things that are appearing on a seemingly daily basis?
Whatever it is I'm average - I want to be better than that!

You might be making reference to this post on another forum, which does indeed detail how the built in User Reputation system works, and I would assume this is what is being used on SN as they use the same forum software.
Obviously the values mentioned will be different to those in effect on here, and apart from it being based on registration date and the default number of points being 10 (both pieces of information posted by by Simon here) we won't be told what the other values are and for good reason.

So, is this sort of like the Peer Review system used in the Sciences or more like Target Setting beloved of Governments?
If it moves, count it.
If it posts, rate it.
SN End Of Year Report?
"Vegescoob is about average. He should endeavour to attend more often and give some thought to post content, if there is to be an improvement in his rating".

If you do get reputated , then depending on the reputators level, it will show up as red, grey etc.
red means that it does affect your reputation, grey means that although they may have disapproved your post, their level does not affect your reputation...

Do I need to log out and back in again? All I can see for everyone is a green spot which says about average for each person, despite the fact they are complaining they have + or - or whatever.
