Can you play HD DVDs on a 'standard DVD player?

IN SHORT NO
hd dvds play on a hd dvd player
however.................. hd dvds sometimes have a sd dvd track on them too
have a look at a site like movietyme.com
they clearly state whether the movie has a sd video track on them
but unless you have a hd telly and a hd dvd player
its pretty pointless anyway

They won't work on your PC either, unless you have an HD-DVD drive. To see them in HD resolution you'll also need a graphics card with HDMI and HDCP support AND a monitor which also has HDCP, AND software that actually supports all these.
That's why HD-DVD and Blu-ray aren't on my 'to buy' list for any time this decade.

I heard, HD DVD either had 2 sides a standard def side and a High def side. Or 2 tracks as above. So that you could play HD DVD's on a standard DVD player, but not getting any advantage over a standard, until using a HD DVD player and HD TV.
Blueray apparently doesn't have this option.
BTW Xbox have released their HD DVD player add on for just 130 quid..
