how do you reset an ipod (1st or 2nd gen)?

how do you reset an ipod (1st or 2nd gen)?
it has the apple logo on the screen (B&W lcd) and won't respond to any button pressing :|
I did the
[attach to power source]
[hold]
[unhold]
[hold MENU & play/pause for 5 seconds]
and all sorts of other button/trackpad combos and it's still the apple logo

any other ideas other than stamping on the fvcking thing?
