Default Seeding a lawn at this time of year?

Having some relandscaping of the back garden done at the moment, By early next week the new topsoil will be down and ready for seed.

Can it be done now or is it best to wait for the spring?

Considering how mild its been and living in Surrey what do you think?

Asking around I have been told conflicting views, so I thought I'd open it up to the SN oracle

It can be done at this time of year I believe. I saw Monty Don on 'Gardeners World' just a week or two ago sowing a new lawn. I'm no expert though might be more info here:

Same here - had been putting off seeding as I was going to buy in turf, but one of the other neighbours seeded his and it seemed to come up overnight.

Mine's been groing for a fortnight now and it looks like an actual lawn - I'm in Scotland too so you should be fine with the weather you get.

I'd take a chance (I'm in Sussex - can't afford Surrey ), after all if it all goes wrong you won't have lost a fortune in a bag or two of seed. And if it does go belly up you can come back to SN and moan about the ****e advice!!

Weather seems spooky at the moment.
