Any tips?

I'm trying a Halfords one right now as a jump starter. It's not what I expected, failed to start my Land Rover, not a nancy car I know, but I wanted a bit more than a long life torch and it did come with jump leads.

This one was purchased and put on charge on Sunday, tried it out this morning.

Am I expecting too much or is it a dud?

I don't own one, but used one to start my car when the battery was totally dead (3.0 NA 4cyl) and it started it fine. Did you leave it connected for a few minutes before trying to start it? I think this is required to 'boost' the flat battery enough prior to starting.

The 'proper' ones are quite expensive. I'd keep a spare battery on trickle charge personally.

the cheaper 20 30 quid ones most of the time will not start a dead flat battery, diesels even harder due to cranking

the moderate ones ive used that seemed to start most things were the sealey ones at about £80, peak cranking power you have to look for

I got one for about £60, which has tyre inflator and mains socket included. It's started a 2.5 Volvo fine, haven't tried anything bigger. It's as well to leave it connected a few minutes first.

Sealey sell avery good one for £150 ish ... i have used my one to start about 10 cars inc big engines and have still not had to charge it again

Well it's been on charge for 48hrs straight now, I'll give a go when I get home, thanks for the leaving it connected tip, that could be the answer.
