Unhappy Leaving the Sceen of an accident

Hi,
One Friday night someone drove into our car, causing a few hundred pounds worth of damage (at a guess) and drove off. We live in a cul-de-sac so there is no passing traffic, which narrows down the possibilities of who it could be, its also obvious due to the pain swap of the colour of the offending car.
It appears that a neighbour’s teenage son had a party and a friend of his with the same colour car was there. She has denied doing anything but it did feel like they were hiding something so we have gone to the police and they have come round, taken a paint sample and are going off to speak to the neighbours son to get this girls detail.
If they do find out who did it, what will happen to whoever hit the car and do I have to inform my insurance now? As if no one is caught I will not go through the insurance to fix it, not worth the loss of no claims etc.

tbh it was probably some drunk **** that thought better to be done a few days later for hit and run rather than own up and get done for drink driving...

sorry its a bad thing to happen but that the way ppl think.........

i would imagine if it was obvious that the old bill were taking paint samples you may get a knock on your doo from some teerfull slapper begging for sympathy and offering to pay for your repairs (which is a lot better for her than loosing her licence)........

looking from the outside thats my opinion of the situation.

Thumbs down

I can: A N Y M O R E . See?

Anyway, a similar thing happened to my eldest, his Ibiza '53 plater was hit by (we think) a 4x4 in a car park at college where he goes one day a week. No note, no witnesses, no security cameras

Just a badly stove in wing, scratches etc and loads of dark green paint left behind.

He and three mates searched for the offender, then staked out the college car park on the same day for THREE weeks running, but found nowt.

What's the betting it was some daft bint in a car too big for her?

Cost him over £400

I'm shocked the police came and taken a paint sample, they wouldn't bother round here and say tough cheese and to claim on your own insuance.

If you see the offending car with the damage, make sure to inform the police the reg number so they can persue the owner.

Like I said, I'm shocked they actually came round to take a sample, which is useless if they haven't got the offending vehicle's details

The guy who hit my car and scarpered got 6pts and a big fine for driving without due care and attention.

The other side of the coin is, when I was 17 I was t-boned by a driver, who then reversed away and drove off I gave the police the reg no and a full description of the car (being an anorak has it's bonuses), but they said they couldn't find it in their records

To this day I believe it was a p!ssed up off duty copper and his mate covered it up for him

Thanks to all the people that corrected the spelling mistakes, your parents must be proud that you are making such a useful contribution to society.
Anyway, After a tip off from another neighbour (name, town of residence of the girl and car type) we passed these details onto the police, last night I randomly saw a car fitting the description and with appropriate damage driving around and took a note of the Reg number, a quick DVLA check and the detail match the info given from the other neighbour. We have passed this onto the police and they need us to fill out some forms and give an estimate of repair cost (I’m going for all new parts from the dealer basis now). It’s been 4 days now and the police haven’t actually come round yet, what are the chances given the amount of work we have done and the ‘evidence’ we have provided to them?.
I really want to get the car repaired as I have only had it for a month after saving for 6 months to buy it and it looks a mess now but I guess I have to hold out and see what the police will do (if anything).

Don't count on the cops doing anything, if the person who owns the car deny's it and has got rid of any traces of paint from said car, the cops can't prove a thing and you'll end up paying for the damage yourself.

Don't involve your insurance company yet, cos soon as you tell them you've had a ding dong, bang goes your no claims, and you will still have to pay the premium on your policy anyway.

And as there are no witnesses its your word against there's, unfortunaltly

Update....
Ok so the police sent the forms to me and Girlfriend to fill out. They also sent on to the girl that we suspect hit the cars mother (car registered in mothers name). We had a knock on the door last night from the offending girl admitting that it was her car that hit ours after initially denying it......

she has said that the car was parked up and some one else at the party let the hand brake off and it rolled into ours, amazingly it then carriend on down the road, round the corner along a flat bit of road, around another corner and up a hill into the next street, all with out the aid of keys and the driver.......
apparently she was not aware of the damage to our car, as hers was now in the next street and she didn't notice the damage to her car, including a broken headlight, hence not admitting to it when she was asked the next day or putting two and two together over the last two weeks.

Also apparently there were loads of witnesses that will vouch that this other person let the handbrake off and watched it roll into our car, only 'apparently' no one told her this at the time and she only decided it was relivant when the police sent a letter to her.

I decided it was for the best not to explain the obvious flaws in her story as she will put all this in the police report and it will help us, as all i really wnat now is the cost of repairs to our car.

Any ideas where we stand if some of the story is true, given I assume the lad that let the handbrake off is uninsured, can we have any claim againsed the girl as it was her car that hit ours and she should have some sort of duty/responsibility for it.
We have explained that if the repairs are paid for (£700 main dealer) we will stop police procedures but are not willing to consider it too then. Also we mentioned that given that she denyed it until the police were involved we are not willing to get the car repaired at a cheaper place (parts can be repaired but thats not the point)

I'd just let your Insurance Company know what the Police Crime Number is, and let them take it from here on. After all, that's what you pay your premiums for.
Why make you life awkward?
