If it's 6months old isn't it covered under warranty? i.e. repair at NO cost to you

The retailer is liable. If you choose to benefit from the guarantee and not to pursue the retailer directly then theyre certainly liable to pay any carriage costs incurred. If the people in the store dont grasp this simple problem then take it up with the Trading Standards dept at your local borough or county council, who'll explain their legal obligations to them for you.

its a sony kdl40s2010 and the fault code is 4 flashing red lights

Sony have told me that the warranty is return to base (closest replair centre in droitwich LAS computer services) For them to collect it will cost £50 + vat

and yes I will be taking this up with them but they seem certain this is the case unless it is less than 4 weeks old

Sony isnt the retailer Rich. The retailer is liable for your out-of-pocket expenses here. Sony set the terms of their warranty; once given a warranty is legally enforcable (which didnt used to be the case), but what the warranty actually provides is at the discretion of the firm providing it.

You dont have an arguement with Sony at all; you need to take the expense up with the retailer. Theyll tell you to **** off out of ignorance/arrogance/stupidity; then take it up with your local TSD or simply write a seven day letter and start County Court proceedings against them.
