Travelling
Hi,
I wondered if anyone can give me some general advice about going travelling?
I have been thinking about going to North America as the traditional backpacker destinations (Thailand, Australia etc) don't appeal very much. Has anyone travelled around the U.S?
Also, this is a bit of a vague question, but if I was to go for 6 months, how much money would I need?
And finally, as I am 30 would there be problems with visas? I seem to remember someone saying it is easier if you are younger, but that may have only applied to Australia.
Thanks.

Well done for daring to go somewhere other than Thailand or India (man). The States is a fascinating place full of variety. You might want to head over the border to Canada and Alaska too
Lonely Planet do a series of shoestring traveller guides, including USA and Canada on a shoestring.

I took in the US when I had a year off. It requires a lot more budget than the 'usual' backpacker places. Giving you a figure to go by would be futile though because everyone wants to do different things when they are travelling. Best to sit down and work out what you require for a daily budget taking into account: food, accommodation, travel within the country, socialising (drinking), activities etc.

If you are british with no criminal record you can stay in the US without a visa for up to 90 days-no more.
So three months is your limit- unless you exit, say into canada then reenter for another three, unless you fancy waiting an age for a b2 visa that is......http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/niv/b2.html
Casual work visas do not exist for the US either if you were thinking of working your way around.
