Question Montana coal

***please note this is not a terrorism/ middle east bashing thread****

Was watching the news tonight about the governor of Montana producing petrol from all the minerals there for $30 per barrel.
Got me thinking- why aren't we coal mining still if Montana on its own has enough to supply America with 40 years worth of oil???
He has a point when oil is $70 a barrel when you have to rely on unstable sources for it.

On the face of it I couldn't see any huge environmental downsides aside from the obvious one of using up the resource. Even stuck some nice green fields down when they had finished

If they could just combine it with halving energy needs so it would last for 80 years instead.

IIRC South Africa produced quite a lot of gas oil from coal during the sanction years. SASOIL I think it was called.

In fact I think the USA gets the vast majority of its oil from S American, not the Middle East, and they must be worried about the growing anti-USA, leftist politics in that region. Just my barrel's worth....... dl

Not just coal but 'tar sand' too. One of the areas I'm currently working in is Athabasca. One of the largest in the world.
The downside is the total destruction it causes around it. Buy hey, it's only nature.

Mostly the massive consumption of water required in production and deforestation. Obviously it doesn't look pretty and some people claim the area is 'sacred' but as they are only a bunch of 'natives' nobody cares much about that.

I'm not an expert on the technical side of exploitation&production as I like to call E&P I just take the money and sod the consequences.
