anyone keep fish ?
I have recently setup my first tank, I have been buying the fish in stages, as and when the nitrite levels were coming down..
On sunday I bought a Red Finned Botia (about 4" in length) along a couple of other fish.. only problem being that he seems to have moved out, and is now nowhere to be seen.
I have emptied the tank of all the rocks and background polystyrene wall, but he is not in there. He is not anywhere to be seen on the floor in that room, and the door was shut between him being in the tank and vanishing, so the hound hasn't snaffled him. There is a hood covering the tank, so I can't see how he would escape anyway ?
The other fish are not big enough to eat him, and there are only 3 Barbs, a small catfish and a small lobster sharing the tank.
It's now been over a day, and he still hasn't turned up anywhere ??
Where the hell is that fish ??!!

Hmm, as said before catfish
I have got two sun cat fish which are approx 4" now , They are in a tank with a syonodontis (sp) and he seems OK, but I had 3 clown loaches, 2 of which were a decent size and have vanished, and have also lost 2 plec's and a ghost knife fish from that tank all of which just "vanished" without a trace!! Catfish can be the only culprits as their mouth's are huge! I loved my clown loaches too

We had a spell of fish going missing. It wasn't until we actually caught the lobster with a large fish in its claws that we realised it was capable of taking fish of considerable size!

hmm,
could be the lobster, could be the cafish.. I think they may have done him over between them.. he was charging around like a lunatic most of the time !
the lobster has taken to digging holes under rocks now, and the catfish is just laying upside down under anything he can find..
any suggestions for some fish which may put up a better fight ? (without them all ending up dead)

the tank is a 3ft at the moment, if the need arises I dont mind getting a bigger tank to accomodate the fish..
the catfish is a brown / grey colour with dark spots on him, not sure what sort he is, but was told that he wouldn't get that big..
been trying to find a similar fish on the web, but haven't yet..

Our lobster took out a 4" Texas Cichlid before we finally got rid - crabs can do similar damage, these beasties don't just scavenge they'll hunt too - usually while the fish are "dozing" at night near the bottom of the tank.

the catfish looks similar, the orange dude looks quite cool too..
just googled "snakehead" and this came up...
the snakehead is a top-level predator fish native to China
maybe not something to introduce to my tank..

THe synodontis likes to lie upside down under the wood, when I forst got him and I saw him like that, I thought he was dead LOL Just something he does, he swims upside down too sometimes
THe best thing to do when you go for more fish is to go to a place where they know about all the fish they sell and tell them what you have got in your tank and ask what will be suitable to mix

Anybody know what is best thing to feed Clown Loach's to make them grow BIG. Also I find the big fish in my tank always stay hidden and out of the way, whilst the little ones swim about all over the place. Any ideas how I could encourage the fish to stay out in view (silver shark/clown loach/plec)

Watch the silver shark with smaller fish
Clown loaches take years to get to full size, you can get wafers and pellets for bottom feeding fish like clown loaches and plec's and decent flake food will give them good colour too
Algae wafers are good for Plec's and the clowns like them They don't get big that quick though and if you overfeed them your tank will be full of fish poo and ammonia etc
Plec's more likely to appear when the light's off
