ferrets, anyone have em
just collected my 8 weeks old ferrets
i got 2 jills and 1 hob
beautiful lil creatures, how long after manning do they stop nipping their wee teeth onto your fingers and bloody hell sharp nails even at that young age lol
these i bought to work the land, hunting etc, to put into burrows to flush out the rabbits so i can slip my hawk on the rabbits
do u leave the food in all the time or call it or whistle to them to teach them to come out for food and they know im here to feed them so in the future they will remember me calling if they decide not to come out of the burrow
any tips will be awesome plz
their polecats
cheers

I met a chap with some lovely ones a few weeks ago (ferret racing on a corporate day) - carried them around like little rag dolls, all very placid and lovely to stroke. I asked him how he'd got them to that point and he said the trick is to feed them as pups so they fill their bellies and then leave them for 5 minutes before making a fuss of them / stroking them etc so they get used to it. apparently that stops them biting as they're full and so aren't minded to nip. eventually they don't bother nipping at all.
good luck

Moses - you know you have to get the girly ferrets neutered too don't you... they get "female" problems otherwise and it shortens their lives

Ferrets smell
I feel I should warn people, 'cos no one told me and I cuddled one and spent all day stinking to high heaven of ferret, tried to drown it out with various perfumes and aftershaves, but then I just smelled like a ferret on the pull.
And before anyone asks a ferret on the pull smells very bad.

lol @ 84 out of 300 i woz chillin oot in gitmo lol just kidding just busy bud and hows u and i hope u have a cool weekend
miss kinky if u get the hobs snipped u dont need to get the jills neutered , see if its a pet animal its fine , but for a working jill getting neutered she will get lazy and fat
so lets say if i had to jills and no hob that will mess up the jills when in season and it can end up in death coz of their ostrogen or whatever level going up i woz told but if u have a snipped hob he can still have sex but his sperm will be dead so he can still mate and put the jill out of season
so i woz told from the guy who breeds them for hawkers and falconers
cheers , i have to get a book i think for working ferrets
thanks alot and any more info will be awesome and cheers

If you need to ask this sort of question you shouldn't be out on the landscape releasing hawks (Harris?) or ferrets. Seriously, please talk to some experienced hunters...
Please!

You can't just buy hawks and ferrets and release them on the countryside unless you know what you are doing. If you are asking on here then you don't. That is my point.

dude no offence , i respect u, u sound an awesome and experienced man
we havent spoken about hawking here and your posts sounds like im just gonna get a hawk and hunt with a ferret which sounds so pathetic
ive hunted with my mates harris hawks and ferrets and at this time at nite i cannae get hold of them , its friday nite, everyone is partying
i collected them today and coz theirs ferret owners here im asking the ones who work their ferrets some questions like after manning how long before they stop nipping and do u leave your food in all the time , i know they do that with the pet ferrets but working ferrets they call them when feeding them so during the training its alot easier to train and call from the burrows
and also regarding hawking, yes dude inexperienced compared to u if u r a hawker coz we dont seem to know each other but without meeting me or seeing any threads about hawks u r assuming something
i dont blame u of course if my post came across like that
my bird is moulting at the moment, 8 weeks to 10 weeks to go and till that time im gonna get it used to the ferrets before i even consider hunting the hawk with the ferret
till that time it will be me hawk and the crows, pheasants and rabbits
when the ferrets r ready, then up the lanark hills with my mates once again, this time i wont be borrowing their birds but hunting with my own
cheers dude, any advice will do
what birds do u fly
cheers, im aff for in a bit will speak to u the morra
have a nice weekend

In fairness to Moses, he's had his hawk for quite a while now so I wouldn't say he's a complete novice with hawks.
Sorry, I know nothing of ferrets except they smell. A mad woman near me used to keep some in a spare bedroom and when some people bought her house it still smelled after they ripped out all the floorboards and disinfected everything!
Actually they don't smell if you keep them clean, change their bedding regularly as they wee/poo on it etc.
Hope you get on well with them, best asking people who already keep them for advice if you know some.
