Whitsand Bay, Portwrinkle/Finnygook, Polperro, Cawsand, Kingsand plus the ferry to Plymouth and the Mayflower steps on the Barbican (avoid Plymouth like the plague)
Cross into Cornwall from Devon on the Tamar Bridge and get a sight of Brunnel's bridge

Lots of nice places in Devon and Cornwall, including Padstow. Other places I can recommend are Falmouth, Penzance (not bad anyway), Mevagissey, Fowey, Salcombe and Dartmouth. Like dpb, arrived by water, so all of these are on the coast

Try Clovelly or Appledore in North Devon, both lovely places to visit and great for fishing, may even have a chance of some fresh run salmon, if we get a bit of rain, and you should'nt see a chav or cheap jewellery and lager in either of them.

Hayle in cornwall is nice and only 10 minutes from St Ives!!
Beaches a plenty, surfing is pretty good, it's reasonably well placed to see many of the local attractions as well.

Padstein is still lovely, but we tend to go out of season so you may find right now it is too busy and has some of the less elegant types there. The Camel Trail from there inland through Wadebridge and Bodmin and on into the countryside is a great day out on rented bikes. 34+ miles with stops for beer and cream teas.
Nearby Port Isaac is a joy, and fish & chips at The Slipway in the harbour is awesome, especially if they ran out the day before and the tides time the arrival of the fresh catch to perfection. The cliff walk to Port Quinn is arduous but rewarding, with an easier overland return.
Boscastle is back on its feet after the disaster and is well worth a looksee. Have a walk out at least to the Coastwatch station, but preferably all the way to Tintagel to view the ruins of King Arthur's castle.
Clovelly as mentioned earlier is a step back in time, but wear comfy shoes. The food in the Red Lion at the bottom has always disappointed though, but I haven't tried the other pub halfway up.
Summerleaze beach at Bude is beautiful in the evening as the sun is setting, and has a very relaxed feel.
Watergate Bay near Newquay is another very good north coast beach, and Jamie Oliver has a 15 restaurant there now, but getting a booking may be difficult.
St. Ives is a bit too big and touristy for my liking these days, but is worth a look around to see the galleries. Don't eat on the sea-front ! Just watch others get attacked by the gulls for some entertainment
Mevigissey, Mousehole, Looe and Fowey are all pleasant.
Blackpool Sands near Totnes is a gorgeous beach, like being in the Med on a hot day.
Eden is a good day out if you have an interest in plants, otherwise you'll be impressed with the structure but bored after 2 hours.
If you go to Lands End, park at nearby Sennen Cove and walk the cliff walk to save yourself from the extortionate parking prices and huge crowds.
St. Michaels Mount is another good day out.
Another good bike ride runs from Barnstaple and follows the estuary Tarka Trail to Bideford and inland towards Torrington. Again, cream tea and beer stops make a fun day.
There's some excellent cliff walks around the Lizard Peninsular too.

Kingsbridge area is very nice. Plenty smaller villages with local hostelries that are worth a visit.

Mousehole (pronounced Mowzul) is rather quaint and nice - bugger of a place to park mind!
Another vote for Sennen Cove - on a clear sunny day with a strong wind so the waves come crashing onto the rocks around Lands End!

Via the Landmark Trust, an organsiation that own and rent out for holidays historic and interesting buildings, we rented this one, its called Pond Cottage in the grounds of Endsleigh House in Milton Abbotts, near Tavistock. My Great Grandad used to work as the head gamekeeper for the Duke of Bedford at Endsleigh house and this was his cottage so my dad and his two brothers used to stay there in the fifties and sixties so there was a family connection.

Its so peaceful yet only a few miles from Tavistoc, Portsmouth etc, utterly idylic, no bypass, pylons or airport nearby to spoil it. It goes very dark at night and we are fairly certain its haunted !
