To put bloody air con units in the trains?????

Sod this groundwater cooling crap half assed scheme- just fit some aircon!
Every other major city in the world seems to manage just fine.
New York (used as an example as i spend so much time there) is hotter than this generally from june through to september, yet they have air con on the subway. Its rather cool in them and not unbearable in the slightest.
Closing lines? Nice- so then people will have to pay the £25 congestion charge instead.
47 degrees as reported is ridiculous.
This country really is third rate in so many respects.
/end of rant

I spent one summer commuting into and across London - I changed jobs before the second summer.
I'm with Ken Livingstone on this (and I never thought I'd ever utter those words!) I'd rather walk. I walked from Marylebone to St James and back every day rather than get on the tube. I got fit, but it did p1ss me off - I had an annual season ticket and I effectively didn't use a whole part of it in the hot weather.
It will take a death from heatstroke on the tube before anything is done about it.

" mayor Ken Livingstone has warned that if temperatures keep rising, in future parts of the Tube may have to shut to save lives. "
Nobody else I know is allowed to clock off early because of the heat. Where was the consultation the people who pay their wages - ie someone else/not me...?

1. There is no clearance above the roofs of underground trains to fit air-conditioning equipment.
2. There is no room within the carriages for air-conditioning equipment.
3. Rejecting hot air from trains to tunnels and stations would mean that they are unbearably hot, therefore you would need to provide air-conditioing for all stations too.
So basically what you'd have to do is make all tunnels larger, retro-fit air-con units to all trains and install large capacity air-con units for every station on every line, that means lots of difficult contruction work and large heat exchangers to be fitted above ground.
The cost would be astronomical and all for just a few days a year currently.
The groundwater cooling "crap" is a very practical suggestion given the contraints. If you know of a better way of doing it, please send your suggestions to:-

One of the disadvantages of doing things first i guess, people can look at what we've done and see how it can be improved...
We are pioneers though
I think we should have hot chicks in Bikinis that stand above you and fan you whilst another feeds you grapes.....mmmmm grapes! (seedless)

There are solutions, it just that New Labour and Red Ken are happy to bury their heads in the sand.
e.g. Metronet (the clowns who do as little as possible to maintain the Tube) are proudly showing the next generation tube train this week. The only difference to current ones seems to be some folding seats. Whooo. But wait, when are these wonders to be introduced? 2009 and only then in small numbers. Bless them.
