Importing car parts question
Am considering getting some KYB AGX shocks from ebay but in the US. They are nearly the same price in $ over there as £ over here.
Anyone know what the import duty will be?
Will it be definitely charged?
Is there a way around this?- I remember someone saying that if it was marked up as replacement parts then they are not subject to import duty or is that rubbish?

I think if items are marked as second hand or as samples (you can't charge duty on something costing nothing) and sent to a business they are duty exempt.
However this info was relevent a few years ago and may have changed

Car parts attract import duty of 3.5% and also 17.5% VAT.
Bear in mind that this is charged on the cost of parts PLUS shipping.
Here's an example:
Parts= £500
Shipping= £200
Sub total= £700
ADD 3.5% Import duty= £24.50
Duty inclusive Sub total= £724.50
ADD 17.5% VAT= £126.79
TOTAL= £851.29
Plus, you need to bear in mind, a lot of the parcel couriers charge you for "entering" the goods. Could be around £15-£30 depending on who you use. Also, some of the companies bill you a few weeks after you get the parts, so don't think you've managed slipped through the net...!!
Also bear in mind when choosing your shipping rate that some methods can take a minimum of 4 weeks . I always prefer to bite the bullet and get stuff sent express DHL/UPS/FedEx . It normally arrives in less than seven days from placing the order (better than a lot of UK companies!!).
Hope that helps.

Oh, forgot to add, if you make an incorrect or fraudulent declaration, you can get the parts seized and a fine etc.....
I've found a few times if it is not a big shipment, and they come in via USPS I haven't been charged any duty or vat, though I do think that is the exception...
