chemists..
My neighbour gave me something called a koolpak today, to take down the swelling after I brayed myself with a 2lb lump hammer
a plastic bag, with granules in it, with another bag of something inside....burst the internal bag and hey presto, an instant bag of ice
how does that work then?

Presume its some sort of endothermic reaction that occurs when chemicals in each of the bags meet.
Theres an article here, suggesting dissolving Ammonium Chloride in water is used in ice packs - perhaps the granules are the Ammonium Chloride, with water in the inner bag?
