pulled by the fuzz
hi all,
i got pulled by the fuzz yesterday for a very strange reason. My tax disc is out of date!!!! reason i find it strange is that i definately remember renewing it 2 days after the new price change and fitting it in the 'richbrook' styled tax disc holder , so it cant have been long ago! so i got out the car as i didnt believe the copper was telling the truth, and to my suprize the old out of date tax disc is in place!! so the copper has now filled out a form for the DVLA, so i'd be expecting a letter
when i got home, i had a search through my old tax discs (i keep em for some reason), i find the IN DATE one. so i suspect i took the old one out and put the old one back in
So where do i stand? what can/will the DVLA do?
many thanks

Well, it is a legal requirement that a current tax disc be displayed on the vehicle, so you may not get away with it. You could appeal and explain what happened, and they should be able to check that you had indeed bought the new tax disc - so you may get let off without the fine.

Had just bought a new car, parked it outside a post office to buy tax, and got done for it. Even though I had a cheque written out for 6 months, MOT and cover note!!!

as he already bought it and it was a mistake, which he can prove I think he'll be fine... PHONE them though, letters get ignored

I don't see why you should be let off (from their point of view). Offence was failure to display - you failed to display. Intention don't enter into it.
Good luck, I think you'll need it.

I agree with the above, best get it sorted.
You'll probably find they're much more interested in catching people without tax, not those displaying it

Not harsh, just accurate.
If they let him off, lucky him.
Let's face it, if they penalise everyone £80 for not having a £150 tax disc, it becomes a risk worth taking.

DVLA will chase you all the way they can to get their money.
The offence is failing to display and has nothing to do with actually having tax. I've seen DVLA officials fine people for having their tax disk sitting on the dash of the car, and so not displayed properly.

Unfortunately you have accidentally broken the letter of the law. Since they are all money grubbers these days they may hold you to that and charge you £80 but it is still worth writing a letter of apology explaining your error and reminding them that you were taxed anyway. Don't grovel, it will make them more likely to do you! Hope it works for you.

Not quite the same thing, but...
Daughter got done for not showing a 'pay and display' parking ticket. Daft girl had left it on the dash upside-down. Sent them the original ticket which was clearly valid, and the fine was dropped
