Marcus

By all means have a look at some of the internet based stuff such as Empire Direct, but don't discount some of the bigger retail shops either, especially John Lewis. They have very good prices on the larger Toshiba and Hitachi widescreen TVs (28" and upwards - best prices I've seen). Plus you get decent service, delivery and a 5 year warranty.

Cheers
Chris

Ok, The fergie died yesterday, so spent evening watching tv on 14inch portable, bloody good quality, but a wee bit small.

so I'm after a new TV.

Got to be widescreen and Nicam, preferably 28 inch or bigger. Not too expensive.

Where's the best online deal to be found?

thanks

Get as big a screen as you can afford. I went for a 32" Panasonic 32TXPK2 (from www.bigsave.com) and initially couldn't get over just how big it was in my fromt room. But when I look at it now, I think I should have got a bigger one. Likewise, the neighbours bought a 28" and afterwards said they wish they had got a bigger screen.

regards, Mark.

Cool

I bought my Panasonic 32 widescreen from John Lewis. They price matched to Empire Direct! Works out as a good deal because of the free 5 year warranty.

Hi Markus

Yes I do rate the TV but I have to say I'm not an expert on home entertainment. The picture quality and sound are both excellent. I've not had a look at the website recently but your remark got me thinking and I think I may have picked it up in-store (which is not one of the mega-stores). Give 'em a ring and see what they say.

Cheers

Markus,

What you can do is find the cheapest possible price for the TV you want on the internet, then call your local John Lewis. They should match this price, they did with my Denon receiver.

Hope this helps

I agree with BigMac. Get the biggest you can afford, size matters!

(got a 43" 4:3 toshiba, had it nearly a year, not once have I wished I went any bigger)

Yeah, John Lewis will only price match against a 'convential shop'. I know there's an argument in there somewhere.

Markus,

Compare prices in www.price-guide.co.uk. So far it's the best site I've come across for comparing electronic goods.

28in is too small.
The bigger the better ...
Picture quality on Sony Wega is excellent.
Phillips are very good too but the auto picture format is a pain in the ****.
Before you buy, try to see your choice of tv in action to see if the picture fits to the screen. Watching a footie match or Sky news and having text or scores shaved is a tad annoying.

Markus - to locate the cheapest TV try having a look at some comparison sites such as www.kelkoo.com or www.easyvalue.com ... I echo other comments here, get as big a screen as poss, I got a Hitachi 24" widescreen with in-built Dolby pro-logic surround sound; great tele, but just isn't big enough IMHO.

At the time I got my TV for c. £60 cheaper than any high street store all of whom would not price match. Makes sense to order off the Net if the price is right as most offer free, next day delivery but this is something you'd have to check (kelkoo does this for you!)

for £2k I bought a davis DLP projector. I then bought new curtains which I needed anyway which have a blackout lining. 11ft screen really cannot be beaten. you never get used to it and it is watchable byy day in normal lighting conditionss that you get after work even in summer.

Whena decent 32inch widescreen was costing around £1650, I couldn't help but buy it.

Admittedly it benefits from a screen for £600 but a white well is more than good enough in the mean time.

I think only Sony make a true 16:9 projector don't they? VPL something it's called, 6k when I last looked. I wouldn't have a projector unless it was true 16:9.

For TV's don't rule out places like Costco, massive savings can be made there.

Yep - I have the Sony projector wot does 16:9 VPL-CS10 about £2k, and of course it's a company purchase so it's effectively free.
There's also a £4.5k one which supports high definition TV, but don't see the point yet.
Telly wise, i just got the cheapo Wharfdale for £280 from Tescos which is pretty good (I believe its a Mitsubishi tube). Don't see the point in spending £1500 on 32 inch Sony telly when the projector is only a wee bit more. SAinsburys do a 32'' Amstrad for £299......
btw Sony just released a projector which can project from the side i.e. it can be at an angle to the screen and still work, handy for small rooms. Plus this fella also takes a memory stick so I assume you can project your digital camera snaps or whatever.... nice.

What te hell difference does atrue 16:9 projector make?

It plays me the correct aspect ratio of picture and is selectable between 16:9 and 4:3 it doesnt distort any images, so i dont understand why someone would not have a projector unless it was this sony thing?

Is it the waste of pixels thing?

My mates Sanyo proj just crops the picture if you set it to widescreen so you get 2 black bands either side. The Sony uses all of the LCD panel so you don't get that and get a larger image.
It doesn't make a lot of difference really, projectors don't suffer from compression funny shaped heads etc) in the way tellies do.
