Any one know if debit cards are widely accepted in Bulgaria?
Thank to some nice ****** cloning my credit card, i have had to cancel it before the cheeky barsteward has any more holidays on me (has already successfully booked 2 flights and been refused on 3 others over the last week). As i am flying out on Monday, it is unlikely that i will receive my new card in time.
I have already bought enough levs to cover my expenses but was planning on using my credit card as back-up for emergencies. Now that option is gone, i have transferred money into my current account to (hopefully) cover any unforseen circumstances, but do not know how widely debit cards are accepted. Has anyone got any experience of using/attempting to use a debit card in Bulgaria? Is it safe or am i likely to get screwed again, and just as importantly, are they accepted, i get the impression that it is a cc/cash based society.

I had thought about that, but don't want to pay for something which I (hopefully) won't have to use. I was not relying on the credit card in any way, just want the security of a back-up, and as I have already been screwed for over £1200, I don't want to pay out anymore (however minimal) unless it's absolutely necessary.

Hello
Generally debit cards are not accepted outside the country of issue unless they have a Visa / Mastercard logo over them.
They WILL be accepted in cash machines, so you can certainly withdraw cash although depending on your bank you normally get a service charge added to each transaction.

You can draw out money from most cash machines.... word of warning though thunderbird... we had £4000 stolen from our business account this year due to card cloning...
Check the machines very carefully... best thing is to go into one of the big banks in a prominent position and draw money of from there!!!
