Whilst drinking my "brain relaxant", i wondered just how exactly are aluminium (beer) cans made. It seems like everything below the top is a single piece (no obvious seams etc.), so how is it done? I can't imagine a flat sheet of aluminium being pressed into the can shape, 'cos there would be serious weak spots produced. The neck is narrower that the rest of the can, so there can't easily be some bit inside the can when moulding it.
Also, my "Scrumpy Jack" cans have a 3D effect on the surface, so how do they do that n'all?
Anyone know?

Hmmm' how interesting
Boomer, you should come and work at our place, as we make a
cider ham, the "brain relaxer" we put in is 9.6% and
it's the proper stuff as well in 22litre kegs!!!

easy one that one mate they are just pressed out , some times they are only half formed so as to be able to carry more on a lorry then the rest of the forning is done when the can is ready to be filled in the beer factory , they can hold a hell of a lot of pressure as well and they are only around 0.2 mm thick as well that dome on the bottom gives it all the strenth it needs .
it takes a bit more to build the lids though they are formed in about 6 stages (heard all about it as my dad works is a spark in a can factory )

Absolutely brilliant - thanks everyone. Scoobynet's combined knowledge is phenomenal!!!!
Spudgun - i reckon that they can form an entire Scooby from one single can "blank", judging by the way my bonnet creaked yesterday whilst washing
AJC - brilliant site!! An entire web-site on cans - too good to be true
CRAFT - do you need to open a "cider ham" outlet down in the Midlands, as i am after a job ...and the thought of a combined cider-bacon-buttie sounds very interesting. Any chance of a sample at the Dales Run???
evo kid - there was a TV program a couple of years ago about "machines that you only use once" that had an article about ring-pulls. Pretty exact engineering required, to put it mildly!
Cheers,
