Default Quick question re. points...

My wife has some points on her license that I believe have now expired (SP30 from December 2000). Can someone confirm how long these points last for?! Done and dusted by now?

Also, are you obliged to declare all points on your license to insurance companies? Even if expired? (Taking this as an example - do I have to declare the 3 expired points because they haven't been removed?).

Many Thanks...

Kelvin.

3 years till spent
4 years till you can apply to have them removed from license
5 years till you dont have to tell the insurers

These days they usually ask specifically "have you had any convictions within the last x years" (usually 5 yrs), they also sometimes ask a further followup question of "have you had a ban (etc) withing the last 10 years". If they ask you have to answer the question honestly, if they ask and you lie then you're effectively committing fraud.

I was banned for DD40 about 9 years ago, so most companies aren't interested about it now. But when they ask for stuff within last 5 years (for example) I usually get them to confirm they aren't interested in anything older.

Last thing you want is to have a policy voided for non-disclosure or lying, so it's better to be safe.

Your ''supposed'' to tell them of any convictions in the previous 5 years but how are they going to know when they are wiped from your license after 4 years?

No evidence unless they go hunting DVLA records which is doubtful

Insurance companies can ask whatever questions they like and if you hit them with a big claim, they WILL hunt down any records they can, and void your cover.

Last form I filled in said "have you EVER" etc. If old convictions are not relevenat, then they will ignore them when preparing your quote anyway.

I have never made a motor claim and hate paying the premium, but if you do get caught up in a nasty accident, you'll be damn pleased you were 100% honest.

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act makes 'no' the correct answer if asked about (minor) convictions that are over five years old. For drink driving or possibly dangerous driving convictions I think that its longer though.....
