How much sleep do you get?
I work shifts that mean some days I have to be up at 5am. The up side of this is that I work 8 shifts in 14 followed by 8 days off. I'm finding that on my days off it's really difficult to get out of bed before 11am, and that's going to bed before midnight.
So....how much sleep is 'normal' - I seem to NEED 8 hours minimum, and function a lot better when working nights...
Just asking as I'm going to be a father in six months, I guess then I won't get any sleep

8 hours a night works for me, any more and I feel too tired and sluggish. I can get by on a bit less but not for long, it soon catches up.
Most nights I'm in bed by 11pm and up by 7am, I hate sleeping in till late in the mornings.

it has to be something to do with shift work... my other half does 3 shifts... days, lates and nights.
on the early shift.. he's out of bed at 5.30am.. and in bed of an evening anywhere between 9pm and 11pm.
late shift... he's usually up around 9 or 10 am... and gets in from work at 12.30am... he can be up til 2 or 3am before he goes to bed.
night shift.. he's in bed for 8.30am at the lastest..... but sometimes he'll be up before midday... other times, he can be in bed til 4pm.
no wonder he's always a grumpy b@stid !!!!
oh.. and congrats on your impending fatherhood !

I need as much as I can get or I'm a grumpy cow
On school term, I have to be in bed before 10pm and I still struggle to be up for around 7
Long walk to school with three kids every day all at different times and pushing a buggy = not that easy and tires me out

shift workers have shorter life-spans than none shift workers - it really doesnt do you any good.
I think 8hours sleep every 24hours is enough - too much and sleep makes me feel rubbish, unless theres a reason for me to be tired"

my sleep pattern is totally cocked up, get by on 6 hrs during school nights, going to bed around midnight. then come the weekend i'm falling asleep in a club, propped up against a speaker at around 10!
oh yeah, then i wake up at 6 in the morning every morning as i think i have to go to work.

I'd be worried about the posts collapsing and being crushed by the weight of the roof of the bed in my sleep too! .

I need less sleep now I am healthier I used to be asleep by 8.30pm some nights and still feel like crap getting up in the morning
Now I can stay awake until 11pm-12am and feel fine getting up at 6.30am everyday!!!
If I stop going to the gym I notice the slip back straight away though

Think Pete may have a point here. My brother is an air traffic controller, has done shifts for over 30 years now, recently he's been told he has a heart problem . I'm sure it's down to the shifts . Can't be good for you.
I'm getting more sleep lately, just taken delivery of one of those Memory foam mattress toppers..... mmmmmmm dreamsville ! Didn't wake up till 10.15 am yesterday ~ unheard of for me !

When i'm on shift i'll get to sleep any time after 10pm, sometimes not until gone midnight. Then be up and out of bed at 5:00 in the morning. At work from 6 till 7.
On my 4 days off i go to bed late and get up late, unless i need to be somewhere in which case i go to bed late and drag myself out of bed early

I used to work shifts but have been working 5am or 6am to 2pm or 3pm for nearly ten years.
I used to goto bed at 11pm and get up at 4 am, when I got home in the afternoon I would grab a couple of hour kip.
Two years ago I had a heart attack and my consultant looked at my lifestyle and was not happy. I now go to bed at 9pm, will usually be asleep by 9.45pm and get up at 5am.
I keep busy in the afternoon so I dont feel like sleeping untill the evening. I'm now getting over 7 hours a night sleep and far more exercise in the afternoon.
Feel lots better for it too.
Cheers

In bed by midnight-ish, get up at 8am.
Don't worry about the fatherhood & not sleeping thing...when my little one was born I used to take her into the study to feed and my wonderful other half remained asleep in bed! He didn't wake up for anything.
From 6 weeks old she slept from 9pm --> 05:30 / 6am anyway so we both got lots of sleep.

I have to be up at 4 am to be at work at 5am (postman). I go to bed around 9pm. Having said that it takes me a while to get to sleep, and then I always wake up before 4am (strange, I know) - the alarm never wakes me up, I am up before it goes off. So I get around 6 hours sleep, and I am not sure it's enough. although I feel OK on it most of the time, and make up for it on my days off.
The job is a social life killer - working tomorrow, so getting to bed shortly, on a Friday night :-(

I used to only have 4-5 hours a night for a few years and am now paying for it. Would go to bed 1am or 2am and get up at 5am or 6am depending on what hours I was doing at work. 8 hours now seems just enough although quite often its still only 6 hours and am permanently knackered
