Default TV ratings

So xxxxxx amount of people tuned in to watch what ever program last night I hear on the radio today, now Ive always wondered how do they know who is watching what, Im almost certain TVs dont broadcast any information like that so I find it strange that they come up with these figures. Anyone know?

The potential and technology is there for the paranoid, which is why I leave my skybox tuned to the parlimentary channel whenever I'm not using it

All TV shows can be uniquely identified by their gamma ray footprint. When a device receives a TV show it consumes a precise amount (or quantum) of energy that can be related to this gamma ray footprint.

Small detectors are then placed across populated areas that can detect the amount and type of quantums used and then this information is collated by a central processing office.

The detectors look like small white flags with red crosses on them. The detectors are driven around high population density areas, particularly where ITV is likely to be watched in order to gather the data.
