I'm bidding on a item and the only other interested person joined 2 weeks ago and has a 0 rating. I went straight to my max bid £130 but every day the other person keeps upping his bid,but only by £5 at a time. Its now on £85 but he's made 8 bids. If its the seller trying to bump it up, if he became the winner could he then remove his bid making me the winner.
It would be a crafty way of getting a decent price.

Does he have a bit in it about cancelling bids from 0 rated people (a lot do), cheeky bugger.
Yes you can do this all you need is a different email address and access to a different IP address.

Hi
Best to look (via Advanced Search - by bidder) at other items this person has bid on and won in the last 30 days.
You can then see if they have been bidding on other items from this seller - which could indicate shill bidding.
We once bid and won a CD changer for a VW - as we were going out for the afternoon - we were not going to be at home for the end of the auction, so i put a max bid of £85. When we got home I checked and found that we had won the item at £83. I then checked and noticed that someone else had put bids in all afternoon until they were just below our max bid.
I checked what else they had bid on and discovered that they had also bid on other items from this seller.
Two big giveaways - 1) They were bidding on cd changers for BMW, VW, Audi etc.! 2) The ID was from the same part of the country as the seller - turned out to be his wife's ID!
We only put a bid in now in the last second of an auction (we have one of those radio adjusted automatic clocks next ot our PC).
I actually make my living from Ebay - as a full time seller!
Cheers!
Steve

The answer is, yes you can do it...........
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/bid-retract.html
Bid a maximum bid just when there's about 12 1/2 hrs left of the auction, something stupid like £1000 for an ipod! You'll find out the maximum bid of the other person, retract the bid, and now you know the maximum bid! Just bid below this and push up your sale price.
Easy, although bid retractions do get logged in your profile so someone that often does it should be easy to spot and thus avoided.
Its bollocks when it says, retractions are rarely allowed. All you do is ''couldnt get in touch with seller'' and it takes your bid away instantly

One more reason not to use ebay!!!
If I am watching something I always check the bids as they go in and if they are low rated users or are in the same area as the seller I steer well clear of the item!

Hi Paulr
Dont know how they knew our max bid - but I suppose they just guessed.
Also when you put in a bid that is below the maximum bid by saomeone else - you get a message to tell you that you are not the highest - you are then told what your next bid should be.
We now only bid in the last few seconds.
We put the max we are prepared to pay - if we them win we are happy, if not - then we buy next time!
Cheers!

Thanks for the replies.
No bid retractions from either the seller or other person bidding.
Of course it could be totally genuine, someone else thinking of buying but is just a bit indecisive. They only joined last week so is unlikely to be "ebay savvy".
Anyway, max bid entered, its now in the lap of the gods.

WAHAY.............i won it. Panasonic Quintrix 28" widescreen for £115,perfect condition. Its the first thing i've ever won on Ebay (always get outbid). Another bidder came in right at the end who only registered last week. Seems a bit odd that the only other people bidding against me were 2 newbies with zero rating.
Do people have multiple id's,and if so why?

Nope, its so easy to do a bid retraction.
Its instantaneous and removes all the bids you have placed! Ebay say its very rare for it to happen, which is a lot of rubbish as its instantaneous if you use the excuse ''cannot contact seller''
Its an easy way of knowing the highest bid also
