People are living longer and there are fewer younger people to contribute to the pot. The Swiss increased the retirement age two years back already to 67 starting 2012. Nothing to do with Blair - just common sense! Which is why you will never get it...

Yeah, that's the next big thing that's going to go pear shaped - after the endowments fiasco. A lot of these pension funds aren't performing and a large propotion of them won't be worth anything like what they're projected to be.

Yes, there's a case for requiring people to work longer as people are living longer, but had Brown not raided pension funds like he did then the measures taken now need not be so drastic as raising it to 68.

a) there aren't state 'coffers' to raid, state pensions are funded out of current year taxes

b) he's already cheerfully ringfenced and protected most public sector pensions (the teachers got theirs sorted this week, for example)

I can't remember the exact numbers but the institute of actuaries firmly lay the blame at Brown/ New Labour's door. Taking £5bn a year from private pension funds for nearly 10 years has been the main driver of today's ~£100bn shortfall (they tracked back to show how those monies would have performed if they'd been allowed to be invested each year).

It's time these Liars were held to account vs both their abysmal performance vs any of their election manifestos and the continual sleaze and dishonesty. For example did you know that carbon emissions in the UK have risen in each of the last 3 years (per today's papers) - doesn't feel like we're going to manage a 20% reduction by 2020, does it? Pillocks. This despite record taxes, record levels of illegal immigrants, appalling performance on education, crime and health and a frightening blame culture which still makes them deny it's anything to do with them!

Time for a change.

Did you realise that Flash is going to force people to pay the extra for the S2P pension but only pay them the basic pension if they have more that £15K per annum.

That sounds like straight robbery to me. Why should they lose all the extra money they have paid in?

Aging population certainly doesn't help but whats been said is right. Real disposable income has fallen certianly in the South and debts per head are at the highest level ever. Due to the slow down in the global economy pensions are peforming badly.

If you can afford it stop paying into your pension and buy some extra property. I'm considering caashing in my 18 yeras of multiple pensions to fund the purchase of another property which I'm sure will perform far better than any pension taking into account the tax issues.

My Dad already retired at 50 so th thought of me working to 68 is rather terrifying but guess its going to ahve to be done. I'd hope to be working form hopme living of ebay by then !
