Default Batteries stuck in "Mag-lite"

Got on of the larger "Maglites" and found it the other day.

Only problem is the batteries have leaked and got stuck inside.

Is there some kind of liquid that will dissolve battery acid???

Or any other ideas.

Tried banging, knocking, whacking and C4 but can't budge it

Depends how long they have been in there and how bad the leak is. The same thing happened to my 3C maglite... the batteries had been in there for years and had completely welded themselves in. Even opening both ends and hammering a screwdriver against the batteries failed to shift them

Worth a shot spray with WD40

and/or put int the freezer, take out put in a warmish oven, take out put back in freezer. The expansion and contraction should break the weak bonds between the battery and the acid.

make sure on end is sealed, and pour in a can / quantity of coke (drink)

leave for 24 hrs and drain and check, its amazing how many locked bolts it can free off

Don't want to sound stupid here... but it isn't actually ACID... a dry cell battery has an alkaline based electrolyte doesn't it?

So wouldn't that gunk be a mild (ish) alkaline solution? If so, wouldn't pouring a mild acid solution on it neutralise it?

So.... pour some lemon juice or vinegar and see if it soaks it up...

Mind you... if I am wrong and it IS an acid then pour bleach on it! That IS a mild alkaline

When it happened to my Maglite, I had to pretty much beat / pull / twist the battery to pieces to get it out.

Cool

Exatly the same thing happened to me on Rally GB 2 years ago, hadn't used it for years, switched it on and nothing! Opened it up and the batteries were welded to the inside.

Solution? Simple! Poured a can of Coca Cola down it, left it while I went to watch the stage, came back and twatted it against a large rock a couple of times. Et voila! Out they came. Flushed it out with water, let it dry and put new batteries in, it still works fine now. Has a couple of scratches on it from the rock, but still better than having to buy a new one.

Geezer

edited to add:

Make sure you take both ends off before you start to hit it against anything!
