Default what to do with "grollier" books

the missus rang a phone no on mcdonalds happy meals box offering a free child book. our name and address were passed and we recieved the book along with about 10 other books. there was also an invoice asking for 8.98 or there is a trial period of 14 days and if they are not wanted to return the books to the po box address. we took the box of books to the post office hoping to send the unwanted books back free, to the company but we was asked to pay over 6.00 for postage. obviously we didnt post them as we didnt ask for them initially. we have tried at length to make contact with "grollier" but the number we initially had is not recognised and a direct number to grollier goes straight to answer machine without allowing messages to be left. today we have recieved another "reminder" for the payment.

the bottom line is that i am not prepared to pay for goods that i didnt ask for even though it will cost 6.00 to send them back. i have a mate who was in a similar position with this company over 5 years ago and he was sent solicitors letters demanding payment aswell as additional costs.
i dont want things to get that far but could do with legal advice on where we stand before things get messy and wether anybody else has heard of this poxy company.

Had this before - after MANY emails and phone calls, they finally got the hint
Hopefully you fair better than we did in effort - but we did not pay for anything in the end (ours came from another source though)

Best of luck

Ignore 'em. If they insist, tell them to come and pick them up or send you some franked, padded envelopes.

Did you sign anything when the books were delivered (recorded delivery/courier etc)?

I was sent a readers digest book I didnt order. I wrote to them telling them that if they wanted it back they should arrange collection, and they did.

It said you could opt out of this on the phone or if you accepted it then you would be invoiced. Grolier have a website, try and contact them through that. If you don't then you will keep recieving these books and will keep being invoiced.

I applied for the free book offer online through their website and it stated on the happy meal box that you could either accept or refuse the offer of more books on both the phone and website.

Is it not true that if you receive something in the post that you did not ask for, you are not obliged to send it back?

Might sound odd, but I'm sure I heard it on a Radio 2 program.

We had the Grollier books for a while. God they pi55ed me off. The Mrs thought it would be a good idea to build a book collection.

from memory you are not obliged to send it back - but you are supposed to contact the sender and let them know you have recieved goods you did not request.

It's up to them to collect it

I had the same problem a year or so ago,i kept ringing them & eventually i wrote a letter & emailed them stating that i only wanted the free book & that i was not going to pay for the unwanted books to be sent back to them, they shouldn't have sent them in the 1st place without notifying people.

I got a reply saying that it says in the SMALL print that they will be sending these books if you sent for your free book but i never saw/read that i couldn't even see it so i just kept the books & kept sending them nasty emails stating i wasn't paying for them or paying to send them back.

Eventually no more invoices & no more emails asking for payment.

So have still got them unpaid for & they are still in the original box in prestine condtion unread.

good luck hope this works for you & you get to keep the books FREE of charge.
