Found a dog today
Had new carpets fitted today, when I ripped the other carpet up and took it out to the missus car (wouldn't go in my scoob) there was a dog sort of cowering around the two cars.
Took a while for him to come to us but eventually, after lots of perseverance (and biscuits) he came over and let me stroke him. He was all shivery and looked like he'd been outside for a few days.
So we (the missus!) decided to take him in. Those of you that saw the dog thread will know I've got a dog called olly, a rotweiller labrador cross, so if they got on it should be no bother.
Anyway, called him Dave the Dog for now, although the missus has called him Riley, here he is.
I've put an ad in the local shop with his details and stuff, waiting for the owner to contact us. He has no ID on either of his collars, if no one claims him I'll phone up the Dogs Trust near Shrewsbury where we got Olly from, they should be able to tell if he's microchipped or whatever.

Hard to say, but I reckon he might have been abandoned - skittish, nervous behaviour would be consistent with that and so would the lack of ID (which seems odd if he's got a collar). Even if he's just lost he's going to be freaked out and liable to be a bit leaky.
I think it's good that you've taken him in though. Try the Dogs' Trust for advice I'd say - they'll be well familiar and probably keen to help. You could also try calling local vets, cos they sometimes have lost/found animal lists.
I think you've got to try and find the owners first - however things look, they might be missing him. If you do end up keeping him, remember to be extra nice to your 'old' dog, so he doesn't feel displaced. New animals need loads of attention, so you have to make the effort to be even-handed!
Good on you.

With all the stories about people abusing animals its nice to see someone who's actually gone out of their way to help one.

I would suggest he's most likely been lost -careless of the owners not to put a collar on him- but he may have been micro chipped as you suggest. Inform the police, place free ads, get the dog checked for the tell-tale microchip. If you don't intend to/can't keep him, get this done asap, or you may well get attached which will make giving him to a for re-homing much harder.
In the meantime, good on you for looking after him. He looks like a nice dog and will, no doubt, make someone very happy.

no...which is why the police should be called asap.
i lost my dog a while ago (wasnt really lost, it was walking itself in fields behind my house and some dozy do-gooder caught it and took it home )
anyway, once i realised it was missing i made one call to the local police station and had it home in 2 hrs as the do-gooder took it to them.
if they had taken it home and posted its picture on some obscure website i would still be looking for it now!

I haven't called the police, but as I said I printed pictures and put them in the local shops etc with mine, my mrs' and the home phone number on.
I think the mrs has her heart set on keeping him, I would rather he went back to his family as I think someone will be missing him. Not sure if he has been abused, its just he was really shaky and nervous, but I am whenever I get lost too!!!!!!
He's not leaky, like he can't control it, he's trying to mark his territory coz the whole house will STINK of Olly to him.
I will phone the local police helpdesk in a mo and see if anyone is asking about him.

good idea.
my dog looked a nervous wreck when i collected it from the rozzers so the fact its nervous may be because you have kidnapped it rather than its abused at home

Just spoke to Police, they said one went missing last night that kind of fits his description, but it was all the way across the other end of the town. But I suppose dogs will travel!!!
The desk rozzer is gonna get back to me soon.
I think I will be very careful about releasing him to just anyone, I'd want to know if they knew what colour collar he has on first etc, got a really strange one that almost looks like a flea collar but it is bright blue. Just a way of finding out if it is really the owner I suppose.
I know I can't stop them taking him though, nor would I want to.

Such a cool looking dog is Dave/Riley. Olly is cool too
I think you have done the right thing in every way so far with the adverts and the fact you have taken him in to begin with. As you will have learnt from Olly, toilet training etc is all part of dog ownership and is easy enough.
My parents took on a Staffy from a staffy rescue centre back in 1998 which had been abandoned, abused (broken teeth believed to be via a human foot or two , starved etc but now 8 years on we have had 7 wondeful years with him. Anyone with dog experience who loves dogs can turn an abused dog into a loving pet with some patience.
Good on you so far for your efforts, hope you keep the dogs interests at heart, along with your own Keep us posted
PS - My mum called our staffy rescue (our second dog) Riley too for once we brought him in we promised him "the life of Riley"

Police just got back to me, turns out his dog used to live next door to me, so its a homing dog!!!
And he knew the colours of his colars, so he'll be round to pick him up in a bit.
Easy as that.
The missus will be gutted he's gone when she gets back from Asda!

Sounds like a right Chav tho, not sure how I feel about this.
Olly will mis him too.
Oh well, another dog returned thanks to the advice of scoobynetters

yeah but if I'd dumped it on the police I wouldn't have known it was being looked after
and to me that is more important.

the police wont kick it about! anyway, from the sound of things its going back to chaville so you giving it a taste of the good life only to send it back there is nasty in many ways
