Default Bring On Identity Cards!!

FFS lets stop messing about and get everyone with an ID Card.

Take DNA samples from everyone and fingerprints.

Crime will half overnight as an almost guaranteed clear-up rate will ensue.

Those who do not want a card or refuse to have one will be banged up for 5 years (due to the falling crime rate there will be room in the prisons) and will have their details and DNA taken anyway.

Lets get on with it!!!!!!!

Remember when the Tories wanted to bring this in. The Labour mob were up in arms about it.

its perfect until you get placed at a crime scene that you've never even seen before in your life. all due to the usual failed, unreliable technology

And you think that it might not happen, then?

Personally, I think the pros outweigh the cons - just interested to know how the govt is going to fund it...

Its so simple, so logical ........ get DNA from a crimescene and run it through the computer - BINGO!!!!!! Arrest made!!

If you can PROVE you were not there then you will have nothing to fear .... BUT, if your DNA is on my car windows and your fingerprints are on the ignition wires ..... then YOU ARE GOING DOWN!!!!

Just imagine having details on all those pikeys who want to stay hidden??? EXCELLENT!!!!

Good idea in theory - unfortunately given the government’s (all parties) ability to implement such projects it will be open to abuse by criminal elements, it will not be 100% accurate and will poorly implement and over budget !

So all you need to do is swipe a used pint glass from a pub, which will include DNA and fingerprints, commit a serious crime, leave the evidence from the pint glass at the scene and you have committed the perfect crime.

Unlucky for the poor punter who used the glass, but what the hey, the crime clear up figures would be great!

Why should I have to prove that i'm not somewhere just because technology isn't reliable enough?

Felix in a recent thread IIRC said that a DNA sample costs £1000 per time. Times by the 70 ish million in the country and you've got a 70 Billion bill before you buy the software, create the cards and put all the management round it.

Crime will half overnight as an almost guaranteed clear-up rate will ensue.
No, criminals will just become more DNA savvy.

Those who do not want a card or refuse to have one will be banged up for 5 years (due to the falling crime rate there will be room in the prisons) and will have their details and DNA taken anyway.

So you want something that will costs billions, be a nightmare to manage and implement and will achive nothing, it's that kind of blinkered NL thinking that's got the NHS in the mess it is.

What happened to the "innocent until proven guilty" bit

What about the recent story that broke that civil servants are selling personal information to criminal gangs?

What about the cost?

What about the total invasion of personal liberty?

What about the fact that EVERYONE has something to fear?

what about the fact that you will not be able to get a passport without and ID card?

What about the fact that you will be able to be tracked using that card and your personal life will be totally open to scrutiny?

Pete - you're a troll, go back to hiding under the bridge.

Eventually maybe, but they will need to invest massively to be able to cope with the numbers. Even if it drops my 3/4 it's still a big number and you have the ongoing cost each year of all the new bourns.

Also consider that when collecting the DNA you need to know the ID of the person at that point, if they are already on false ID they can commit a crime and then you go off an pick up the person whose details you hold which will be the person whose Identity was stolen originally.

It's not really in the spirit of this trolling thread, but...

For those of you who are opposed to ID cards, now is the time to renew your passport. Passports have now been designated registrable documents under the ID card legislation, so if you renew or apply for a passport after the effective date (yet to be announced but probably in 2007), you will have to give biometric data and can be required to have an interview with new and rather Orwellian-sounding UK Identity and Passport Office. You will be charged for this privilege, whether you apply for an ID card or not.

Renew as soon as you can, while it's still allowed. UKIPS has already been displaying contradictory and misleading messages on the website about when you can renew (answer: whenever you like) and the Home Office may well restrict renewal rights in future - particularly if lots of people want to do it.

More info here if you're interested: http://www.no2id.net/
