can my kid (6) fly a plane for his birthday?
My 6 year old wants to fly a lightaircraft...nothing flash, doesnt want to do loops or anything!
I'm guessing that may be a longshoot? If so how do i get him in a plane for a couple of hours? is it as simple as hiring one (with a pilot i assume!)
I have seen a few sites doing red letter day style flights but they all have age limits.

probably be able to get him a job for easyjet!
there is a minimum age, think maybe 14? you can get a trial lesson at local airfield in a cessna 2 seater or such and i'm sure they'll give him the controls for a bit, can't do much harm at 3000 feet! they are dual control anyhow

I think there was no age limit for gliding, but you had to be physically strong enough to operate the controls, so 11 would be about the earliest. 6 therefore sounds too young.
Trip in a fancy flight simulator somewhere?

not quite, i want him to be a pilot. hardly deciding his whole future and if he chooses to do something else then fair enough.
i dont see its any different to the williams sisters dad who wanted them to be great tennis players.
he loves planes, pilots job pays ok and has some nice perks, i have a few captains as clients and they enjoy it........so i am going to help him get there.
problem?

Have a word with your client pilots.
The wife (no flying experience) has flown a BA 737 on route from Aberdeen to Heathrow as the pilot knew her
Mind you - this was pre 9-11 - and the thing virtually flies itself - she just twiddled a few ***** .

Can't see why most flying clubs wouldn't do a trial lesson with you sat in the back and your kid in the LHS, although I don't recall seeing it happen. Maybe because not many six year old kids get flying lessons for their birthdays than club rules etc.
My lad (7) has had hold of the stick before with me keeping a watching brief on the other. He managed to keep us on course, but couldn't maintain a steady altitude. So long as he keeps doing well at school, then we told him we'd pay for his PPL lessons when he's old enough.
TBH, if he's up to going to Uni, I'd rather pay for him to do his APTL and IR etc. It will probably cost about the same, but at least he's going to study something useful.
Much rather the RAF paid though, but going on current budgets and cuts etc. they won't actually have an airworthy aircraft in ten years time

The FAA says you must be at least 16 years old to fly solo with a student pilot certificate, and 17 years old to get a pilot's license. There is no upper age limit, provided that you are healthy enough to pass the basic medical exam discussed above.

I flew a Cessna 152 (I think) out of St Just in Cornwall when I was somewhere around 6. Same thing as you're talking about - Dad in the back, me in the left seat and the the guy just asked me if I wanted to have a go...
I think Dad had primed him first but what the heck

cant belive it will cost that much? £100?
how much do folks waste on parties and presents normally? far better to give him something really cool to remember than chocky cake and 20 mins on a blow up castle!

Amusing thread....
Sounds a bit like the little girl veruca in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
"Daddy - I must fly a plane"
6 seems a bit young for him to really get much out the experience and really do anything serious.
Simulator and passenger flight would perhaps be better.
Sounds a bit precious to be mapping out the poor little mite's entire life now. When I was 6 I was still weighing up being a nuclear scientist, racing driver and astronaut.

There is no reason why he should not be allowed to control the aircraft at a safe height and under the supervision of the pilot. It would be a wonderful experience for him and it would not be in any way dangerous.
I do have a good many years experience as a qualified flying instructor, and for that matter I was able to teach my air electronics officer how to fly a circuit and land a Vulcan during an evening flight when we were not able to do anything else on that flight. He had never flown a plane before.
Your 6 year old would be perfectly safe at a sensible height above ground.
