Go to www.Moneysavingexpert.co.uk and look under Phones and utilites.

There are a couple of links (even one with cashback) there to check you have the cheapest supplier.

Thats quite high for a summer bill, e.g. no heating, no tumble drying and less TV and home entertainment switched on

Our bill came last week for 3 months in a 3 bed semi £240 Hardly even used the heating at all this month. Didnt think we used that much gas considering the only thing that is gas is the heating

Would be nice to have a device that individually meters each home appliance to see what is actually using all the units.

Just done that, one company could give me a saving of £51 per year. ALL the others are more expensive. So my tariff is pretty good. In fact British Gas would cost me an extra £500 per year

Feb to May. It is lower than Feb bill, but we only recently turned the heating off, too bloody cold!!

For comparison, 4 bed detached, 3 reception rooms. 2 adults, 2 under 5s

Its the 3KW kettles and 2KW washing machines/tumble driers that are real killers for the electric.

Apparently one full kettle uses enough energy to boil itself than all the lights in your house need for a month

I would say it's time to buy a kettle to put on the gas ring, but I'm not sure that's a cheap option anymore.

I am surprised that a 3KW kettle costs more to boil than any other kettle of the same capacity. At the end of the day, the calorific value of the water doesn't change and the amount of energy required to make it boild will be the same, I'd just expect a higher KW kettle to do it faster?

Wonder how much it costs to put a cup of water in a microwave & heat it up that way for cups of tea ?

That is a really dangerous thing to do with a brand new cup. What can happen is that the water reaches more than boiling point, but because of the smooth sealed surface it doesn't apear to look 'boiling', next thing is you open the microwave, move the cup and it then explodes on your face.

Look it up on health and safety guides

It may be slightly cheaper in that you are heating the exact quantity of water rather than a whole kettle full, I wonder however, how efficient a microwave is, there are bound to be losses in terms of electrical KW in vs what actually gets fired at the cup of water.

Super heated water due to a lack of nucleation sites

I've saved a lot of money by sticking a magnifying glass to the window and leaving a cup of cold water with a teabag in it on an exact spot the night before. As the sun comes out at 5am I get a nice hot cuppa in time for my 8am breakfast before I go to work in my Dodge pick-up.

You could save even more by getting a 12v kettle and running it using the Dodge pick-up battery, shouldn't drain the battery if you keep that V8 well revved . No home bills to worry about or investment in black cups

Also if you stuffed your cup full of fibre glass insulation, it would keep your tea nice and warm all morning, without having to resort to microwaving it when it goes cold !

I know a legal way to reduce electricity and gas bills by 100%. If anyone wants to know, send me 20 quid and I will tell you
