sunbed question
when you hire a sunbed you are provided with goggles to wear. are they to protect the skin around your eyes or are they to protect your eyes?
i wasnt sure if the harmfull rays can penetrate your eyelids, obviousley i will have them closed
anyone?

It's to protect your eyes from the UVR. Your eyelids aren't very thick and will do little to protect your eyes from the exposure to radiation. If you want to risk becoming blind, just close your eyes and forget the glasses.

Sod the goggles, I'd be more worried about getting an electric shock....

To be frankly honest, I was thinking exactly the same thing myself.
Your reaction towards Chris seems a little bit OTT which I'm sure is entirely due to current events surrounding you.
Not ideal post by Chris but still reckon there was little need for such a reply
All IMHO

You wouldn't prefer people not to comment would you? After all, you start the threads for that very reason.

Not to drag this off topic but I think trying to link this to the thread about Sara's mum is wrong as it has no real bearing. I'm sure Sara is aware of the risks of sunbeds but because of her mums situation she is not going to stop living her life or cut out anything which may be slightly harmful in some way. it may be she wants to get a start of a tan before going on holiday as that way she can control the tan thus giving her more protection from the sun once on holiday.
anyway I think the post from Chris was a bit insentive.

i am taking my mum on holiday and as she is recovering from radiotherapy she cannot lay in the sun.it would be unfair to try to get my own tan on holiday as my mum has to cover up. i decided to get a light base tan before i go. i am well aware of the skin cancer risks if not done properly
as for every thread being an open target i would have expected some sensitivity to my cancer thread at least. i have not poured out my heart on non related threads i have kept it to the one in question and i thought people would respect that, not take a pop at me when the chance arrives

Perhaps insensitive, but that's about it.

i cant seem to do right for doing wrong lately. i started the cancer thread to help my mum and as it has turned out it is helping others too. it is a personal journey for those involved. its sad when a small minority (two moderators) have to drag it down into the gutter
i only hope they dont have to deal with cancer in the future

I honestly mean the following with the best will so please don't take offence:
Perhaps they both have had to deal with it already, or maybe they are currently dealing with it.
Your very public and well meaning thread to help your mum has obviously brought alot of information and comfort to some people on here but for me personally it serves as a painful reminder everytime I open up the front page of NSR.
Everybody deals with things differently and you are obviously a very open and public person.
Many people on this forum probably don't like to see a 'cancer specialist thread' always on the front page but I'm certain that they accept it as a part of life and don't post negatively on that thread out of respect for you and your mum.
I just feel it's harsh to assume that people haven't been touched by life events in the way that you currently are.
Other people may be going through sheer hell and they may find solace through humour, defensiveness or aggression.
Don't really know the full point I'm trying to make here Sara but live and let live springs to mind.

Chris's post is 100% inappropriate........ because this thread can not possibly be about sun bed safety.
If the original poster is truly curious as to whether rays of light (that do ok getting to earth from 93 million miles away) will "bounce of her eyelids" then Google would be the place to start (or the sun bed hire firm). There she could learn about the risks of photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis.
In reality there was never likely to be sufficient advice given by Dr's on this thread for the poster to decide how to proceed.
This thread is about a woman saying she’s getting a tan and extracting a few "let me rub in the lotion" "cover your bits" posts which were inevitable on this site, and it worked.
Its attention seeking, but no harm in that.........it has NOTHING to do with her other post though.

snug rhino...it was not attention seeking, i had a valid question and it was answered
sipie...if you take a look the cancer thread was last on the front page on 29th April until today.
most of the comments made on the sunbed thread are from small minded dimwits. i asked a valid question but expected some stupid comments would be made, but at the same time tact does not require a degree.
however taking a thread off topic is something that is frowned upon, when i do it i get a public slating by the mods, but when it happens to my threads it is an open house for abuse...

Fair enough, what you could have done was typed "sun bed goggles" into Google....as thats shorter than you post here you may have had time to read the first links and have your question answered - if you still had no time you could have returned later to read the links.
Had you come back here and found a few replys suggesting the goggles are not overly important what would you have done? taken the advice of strangers?
