Unhappy Sky+ Box Dead

Hi All,

My Sky+ Box went bang tonight......opened her up and the fuse inside has blown and theres a brown burnt bit next to one of the chips....changed the fuse and it went bang again....fooked i think.

Just spoke to sky and all they can offer me is multi room....which I don't want or a new box at £259.....I tried the old "how do i cancel my subscription" and they just gave me an address to write to and said cancel your Direct Debit....was hoping they would maybe do the box a bit cheaper.

Right heres my question...Ive seen quite a few box's on EBay and in fact brand new ones on line for half the price...but I still would have to get the new box and card paired (£65 from Sky). Is there anyway of doing this pairing of card and box or is it only Sky that can do this?

And has anyone else got any better suggestions? I think Sky + is great Im just begrudge being ripped off by Sky...

Thanks in advance

Tony

You buy your Sky+ box from whoever you want. You then telephone Sky and they'll talk you through pairing it up for free.

I'm on my 3rd Sky+ box I sent an email to Rupert Murdock's son, the MD of Sky, and got a reply and a phone call with a few hours plus £50 of vouchers for the crap service I got.

I bought a new one from here http://www.simplydigital.co.uk/ The Pace PVR3 is regarded as the best one and like all V3 models, it comes with an 160Gb hard disk, of which you can only use 80Gb.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the info...is it a fairly simple job to pair the two and any idea which of the many different departments you need to phone to get this info....I spent almost 40 mins on hold and on to different operators last night, just to get the price of a new box, then I asked about the pairing and she said that will be £65 please...

Cheers

My original Sky+ box was the most temperamental piece of c**p I've ever had. It'd suddenly power off, fail to record and the pause or rewind facility would freeze up. I got fed up having to reset the thing, and of course it was just out of its year's warranty. This was happening almost daily.

I bought a box off Ebay, with an upgraded hard drive (effectively making it a 160Gb) and it's work a treat since I got it, no problems at all. I don't remember having to do anything fancy to pair it when it arrived, but there may have been an on screen message to follow, can't remember...

It was a lot less than half the price of buying a 160 from Sky, too.

My box blew up last week, not Sky+ though, they told me it would be £65 call out charge and £49 for a new box, told them I wanted to be put through to the cancellation dept. and hey presto, they all of a sudden could give me a new box installed for free .

Stick to your guns mate, call their bluff, they will give in

FWIW my Grundig digibox packed up recently. Found an electronics guy on e-bay advertising refurbished boxes for £30. He was close enough to visit (Shoreham on Sea) so I bought a PACE box and he gave me info to phone through to Sky so they could link my card. He also took back off old box and pointed out the awful repair job that my local "specialist" had done about a year ago (£90 ). I did have some problems setting up again but the guy couldn't have been more helpful. My confidence in e-bay has been slightly restored (only slightly mind )

Stick to your guns matey you should get one for free,it may depend on how Long you have been with them but i was told by one employee that they are under great pressure to keep subscription numbers up ,as nearly as many people are leaving as joining.

You obviously didnt read either of his posts that state hes tried this twice and failed.

Is it just me or does it seem like Sky boxes are manufactured with a life expectancy of approx 1yr which funnily enough is the length of warranty?

Im on 2nd sky + box after last one went haywire. Now out of warranty. Will look on Ebay if this one goes as seems the best deal.

Simon.

Panic over new box arrived today from http://www.simplydigital.co.uk/

Pace Sky+ 2 (PVR3) Hard Drive Digibox (80GB) 160GB Hard Drive (80GB available to customer) for £142.95.

Rather than £259 from Sky for a reconditioned box!!!!!!!!!!

No need to pair the box to the card.....it works fine

Just carried out a forced software update and now to get all the series links back on

ring up sky and say u want a "TAS 999" service call. when i was working for them, this was the service code for a free service call, and no cost to change ur stb, the only thing with sky is after the 1st yr they do not(unless ur lucky) swap ur box for a new 1,as they use refurb stb(usually tell by a plain brown box. it does not cost anything to pair a card up to a new stb, put unfortunately i dont have the number or remember the shortcuts for the pair-up service.

Pace Sky+ 2 (PVR3) Hard Drive Digibox (80GB) 160GB Hard Drive (80GB available to customer) for £142.95.

Whats the score here. its got a 160gb drive, but you can only access 80gb of it ?

I've got a v1 pace box with a 120gb drive and all 120gb is available.

Can someone clarify please ?

Taken from Digital Spy forum

Sky+ V3: Newest Sky+ box which has a 160GB Hard Disk as standard. However 80GB of whatever size drive you install in such a box is reserved by Sky, leaving the remainder (which also happens to be 80GB as supplied) for the user. 80GB doubles the recording capacity (from previous V1 and V2 boxes) to approximately 40 hours. No one except Sky knows how to “unlock” the reserved space, so please don’t ask.

Direct link here, with info how to upgrade the HD in your V1 and V2 boxes.

I've just about had it with my Sky+ box. Evry damn sky box I've had has gone wrong in one way or another. The latest 80Gb version from pace? has just gone kaput and I got so angry at losing all my programmes again for the umteenth time that I smashed the remote up with my bare hands!!! I was watching my recorded Lost last night and it locked up, so I switched to live TV and luckily it was being repeated at about the same point - cool. It then crashed a few seconds later and that was when I really 'lost' it.

I could sit on the phone to the customer retention debt for 30 mins to sort it out but I've had enough.

Should I get a Pansonic PVR DVDRam with freeview instead? I hardly watch the movies (all rubbish) or the sports anymore and you can get the kids stuff on free view, right?
