Free Broadband !!!!!!!!
"Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse is expected to announce the launch of a free broadband service later this week.
The company looks poised to provide free access for customers who sign up for their Talk Talk landline service"

Only a matter of time Pete - I was at a BT seminar (up in the big BT tower) and BT made it very clear, that in 5 years nobody will be paying for internet access. You just pay for the premium services etc.

No big deal really - broadband is cheap anyway, and obviously its only 'free' when you sign up for talktalk which is probably £15 a month I would guess?
The broadband will probably be only 1meg speed and limited to a 1gig download limit each month, so by the time you've increased the speed and download limit that'll add another £10/month...
Still be interesting to see.

Talk Talk do charge line rental but it is cheaper than BT.
I currently use Talk Talk for free calls to all my family and friends (usual call costs are about £3 per month now LOL)
So yes, talk talk will provide broadband free, calls free, oh and pay for line rental - bargain if you ask me.

No they're not as they are no longer a "holes and poles" company - i.e. putting wires and telegraph poles in.
They are now an IT services company, all the infrastructure is in and paid for...

Used Carphone Warehouse from the outset. Call package (Talk 3) £7.99/month for unlimited landline calls. Calls to TalkTalk users are free anyway.
Landline charge, slightly less than BT (Charged in advance, as below).
Service Charges:
Talk 3 11/03/06 - 10/04/06 £6.80
Call Charges 01234 567890 £0.37
Line Rental & Calling Feature £9.36
Line Rental 11/03/06 - 10/04/06 £8.93
Voice Mail 11/03/06 - 10/04/06 £0.43
Sub Total for this invoice: £16.53
VAT@ 17.5% £2.89

I change about periodically and thought I might even switch to Pipex for an even cheaper £4.99/month from memory, although that's capped at 3000 minutes/month.
Trouble is I'd lose the Talk Talk landline deal and potentially the free broadband.
Having said that it'll be interesting to see if existing customers get the free broadband (Can't see it not being the case), although previous free months talktime promotions have excluded existing customers.
One thing is for sure, once you move there's always going to be competition to tempt you to move again.

BT Retail who flog line rental, broadband etc to the home & business markets
BT Openreach who do provide wires for Wholesale Line Rental (WLR), maintain exchanges and the like. Openreach owns and manages the network.
Then there is BT Global Services, BT Wholesale and more.
Carphone Warehouse are looking at spending ~£60 million on Local Loop Unbundling to provide this "free" ADSL service. This means they put their own equipment in some (but probably not all) of the BT exchanges. BT Openreach then provide the copper for the "last mile" to houses. As CW will then no longer have to pay BT Wholesale for provision of the broadband, they price it at their levels.
CW have a bit of a way to go on broadband customer levels though. They have approx 75,000 customers. BT Retail has 2.3 million and NTL / Telewest has 2.8 million.
Now Sky own EasyNet, I expect they will be along to the party shortly as well.

All will be revealed to the company employees tomorrow! And announcd to the general public on Tuesday!
From what I know - CPW expect this to be absolutely huge! They've opened 2 extra call centres to deal with demand ( including 1 in South Africa).They're opening their stores 30 mins early on Tuesday and not allowing anymore holidays to be booked in April or May. They've taken on loads of temporary staff and installed dedicated broadband tills in the bigger stores! They have NEVER kept anything this secretive before which just shows how much they are behind it and won't let it fail.They know they have very few broadband customers at the moment but before they were just dipping their toes in the water, but this is their main launch. I do not know the exact deal ( I will find out tomorrow) but they feel that NOBODY will be able to match apart from BT who are very unlikely to!
Rumours I've heard....(remember they are rumours!)
Will be full speed internet eg, 1meg, 2meg, 8 meg - whatever is available in your local area.
There will be no dowload limits (as long as you don't take the pi$$)

Quite a few companies other than BT provide ADSL broadband in the UK via Local Loop Unbundling. We've had an EasyNet LLU ADSL connection at work for around 2 years now. EasyNet activated our exchange for ADSL months before BT arrived.

Apparently peer-to-peer wont be allowed with the free broadband 
I assuming they'll put a block on those ports - so its not a great deal for anyone who downloads lots of stuff using shareaza or whatever, and lets face it thats one of the main reasons for having broadband....
