Attitudes to other road users
Driving the Scoob I got a certain response from other road users that was massively different to that I get driving the M5 or towing bikes behind the Legacy.
If I'm in the Beemer I hardly ever get let into traffic. Builders trucks, white vans etc actively block me, in fact. And yet lesser BMWs, Mercs and so on get out of the way sharpish on the motorway. The Old Bill seem to be far better disposed towards me, too. Nobody wants a race and nobody seems to mind being overtaken.
In the Scoob the same people who blocked me in the Beemer seem to go out of their way to let me in, while low spec BMWs and the like are oblivious as usual. I get let in sometimes, often by spotty ******* in Novas and so on who then want a race. As does everyone else. The Old Bill want to look it (and my docs) over regularly.
The Legacy is invisible to all except fellow trailer towers and truckers, who treat me with respect.
Just curious really - anyone else found this and can anyone give me an idea in particular why so many people (including some who post here) have such a thing aboiut BMWs?
Cheers,
SB

probly becasue ( as you have insinuated in your post) 'lesser' BMWs are driven by arrogant posers/reps who think becasue they have a german car they have some kind of right to the road. You, being a true enthusiast and a real car lover obviously dont fall into that catagory, but other road users who dont know what your M5 is will place u in the same catagory as the rep in the 318 or the boy racer in 'my first beemer' 316 or summit and treat u accordingly.
just seems to be the way of things mate!

Every 3 series BMW driver I have ever met has been a complete to$$er.
Every 3 series BMW driver I have seen on the road has been driving it like they've nicked it.
I'm sure I've just been unlucky .
Bigger BMW drivers seem to have got it out of their systems (Although when you get to the top end of the 7 series it seems to come back).

Reason for the BMW thing - 5 series and up are expensive, decent cars that are generally bought by older people who have a few quid - they had a choice of a Jag, a Merc or a BMW and probably only bought the BMW because they liked the seats or the stereo better.
3 series ( M3 excepted ) are bought by wannabe social climbers who think having a BMW makes them special ( you'll always see them parked outside some horrible Barratt cardboard house on an estate full of fellow junior managers and reps with bleach blonde wives and fake tans ) - lets face it - things like the 316 are no better than your average Astra, Escort, Vectra etc... so why pay loads more money for a car that isnt that good ?

Olly, my Legacy is an estate and my first Scoob was a Legacy Turbo estate - a UK one, about as discreet as you can get. And you're right, I was The Invisible Man...
Timmy, reckon you've hit it on the head. Thanks.
Mike, you're right too. Apart from the seats and stereo being the best reason for going BMW over Jag or Merc. I guess that's the perception but the truth is that the BMW is probably lower specced than the others. It just drives so much better...

Can't say I notice any difference between BMW, Scoob, Jag, Honda Or whatever rental I happen to be driving.
But then I:
a) don't expect to be let out in traffic. Come rush hour, forget it - everyman and woman for theirselves. Out of rush hour - I'll find a safe space in traffic anyway.
b) I generally don't sit and dwell on the reasons why he/she won't let me into traffic, I shrug it off and just carry on.
The only car I ever recieved aggro on a regular basis is any car that my mum has with her private plate, it's been on an array of cars, but the end effect is the same. It just seems to be a magnet for road rage for any following road user, and god forbid if you try to "merge in turn" when a dual carriageway returns to a single lane. Still, I don't feel the need to argue over 15ft of road space, if they want 15ft of tarmac I'll happily let the baby have his lolly (actually, its usually a "her" ).
The other vehicle is my Series Land Rover, people do intentionally try to get past it. I belive it's because the thing looks like a slow-*** sh!tbox that couldn't do above 30mph, people are not willing to get stuck behind it. Truth is it'll happily do well over 70mph and will push 0-60 in 10 seconds, which isn't bad for a 37 year old shed and it keeps up with traffic with ease. But the jolly waves from fellow Landy owners more than makes up for it

No one ever let's me out and I can sometime sit at a junction for ages. When there's a gap, I pull out and floor it so the person behind me doesn't need to brake, and I still get flashed.
This morning, a white van pulled out straight in front of me and I had to lock up to avoid hitting him (damn nearly hit the kerb myself!) - I promptly overtook him and got flashed and had the w*nker sign for about a mile. Why?

It works the other way too.
Get in a normal car and everyone else on the road is just traffic the same as you.
Get in the scoob and everyone becomes a doddering idiot that is holding you up and getting in the way

The car has a lot to do with it but also the situation.
I had a face off with a large Merc the other day at a priority bridge. He advanced onto the bridge as I crossed it with priority for me. So there we sat looking at each other. Luckily I had ALLLLLLLLLLL day free. He soon saw the error of his ways and backed off.
I did make a point of thanking him profusely as I passed him on the other side.
Silly sod.

Having said that - I've yet to meet a chelsea tractor driver that actually knows how wide it really is .
