I thought that and then thought that somebody may have typo'd 'owned' and the irony spread like wildfire throughout cyberspace. I then thought I'd ask Snet confident of an answer within minutes - but Scoobymatt let me down

What's this "my bad" business as well?

It's leet-speak. Computer hackers and the like encoded certain words so that they didn't show up on keyword searches.

Look it up.

Apparantly another example of kidz speak is 'book' which means 'cool' - which comes from the fact that if you try and text cool with predictive text on, it comes up with book first and therefore saves a couple of key presses...

In Castleford, West Yorkshire, "Leet" means "daft".

All the computer geeks use it.

If you have a child that uses it, that means you have failed them...

I'd thought pwned was shortening of pre-owned. But hey, p'haps thats my bad, and I'm bein y'shire leet, bro. Or something equally unintelligible.

Other possibility is that a lot of these spellings are words that someone thought they head on a Nirvana song once - that could cover just about any combination of letters you care to imagine!
