Default Hosepipe bans

Just been reading that customers are liable for a fine of £1000 if they use a hosepipe. Bearing in mind that water may be metered and therefore paid for, what authority do water companies use to envoke such a fine?

I assume it's on the same basis that BT offer unmetered broadband but are planning to disconnect people who are downloading what BT consider to be too much

Good plan - is the fine for using the water or the hosepipe?

How do you meter and prove someone is using a hosepipe ?

Water on the other hand

So its OK to fill 8 buckets of water up to do the car and rinse it as long as no-one films you using a hose ?

How do they get the detergents and tar out ? I am talking about the ones on the side of petrol stations with the rollers etc, they just have drains leading to the mains drainage.

Why not extend the outside tap with copper piping and put a huge showerhead over your driveway, et voila - no hosepipe

AFAIK you can use a "short" hosepipe to fill watering cans etc.

You can legally use a power washer, even though it'll be connected to the water supply by a hose

Yes, I'm sure! It was on the South East Water website, but it has since been removed, presumably because they want to keep it quiet, which is understandable.

They say you can't use them for washing your car or watering the garden, but I don't believe that it would be enforceable - the ban doesn't cover power washers, simple as that.

If you're still not sure, ring your water supplier and ask, but I know what the answer will be

There was a guy from some water board on the other morning stating that it was OK to water your lawn with a watering can, and it was fine to use whatever you wanted to wash the car. The logic behind banning hose pipe use is that they can use maybe 12/15l per minute, while you would only use a fraction using a bucket or watering can

ok u lot have me confused now. going to wash the car this weekend and i normally use a power washer (attached to a hose of course), but since i wash the car , then turn off the power washer when shampooing, does that mean i can use the hose/pressure washer, as it is not a steady flow of water? unlike a sprinkler for example.

To add to the confusion I think there are different classifications of bans!!

Minor - no hosepipes but you can, for example, hose down your patio and council can water cricket pitch.

Turbo version. no cricket pitches or pressure washers for example. I phoned my water company (Sussex) but I am not convinced they really knew!

Park your car on flowerbed or cricket pitch and hose away I say

sorry to pi55 on your bonfire but off 3 counties site.....

Does the restriction apply to jet washes?

Yes, It applies if you are using a jet wash to clean your car. It does not apply for other uses of the a jet wash, but we are asking our customers to be sensible about their water use and to consider whether it’s really necessary

Buckets only I am afraid

in addition to the power washer thingy, you can fill your pool or hot tub, but you can't water the vegetables in a garden/allotment*, which keep a family of 6 alive and very healthy

It's good to see the wealthy being looked after for a change..

from what i've heard, the way it's written is that you can use a pressure washer to clean your driveway and patio as the hosepipe ban jargon was written before pressure washers were a wide spread privately used item.

off to clean the driveway this weekend, i may slip a few times and 'sadly' hit the car DOH!!

Fill the hot tub, then run a pump from the hot tub to water your garden, simple as!
