That British spy/IRA man
Found executed in his remote secret hideaway with one of his hands chopped off and a bullet in his head.
Why be a spy? Do you get paid tons for the danger aspect?
I'd want to end up hidden in the West Indies for all that.Don't think Donegal was the best place
Gruesome though

I thought he'd been shot in the arm, not had his hand chopped off.
TBH I don't understand why he decided to admit it after 20 years.

It all comes down to special branch dirty tricks. They recruited the guy in the 80's. They needed an excuse to stop the peace process in 2002, so they arrested and charged him as part of a spy ring, which caused the assembly to collapse. In December 2005 the spy ring charge were dropped, as they were made up and had served their purpose. It seems that they were about to 'out' him as a double agent to distract attention from IRA disarmament. He fessed up sooner than expected to stop them from doing this. Now, strangely, he get shot two days before Tony and Bertie are planning a chitchat about the ways forward...... wonder who it could have been this time

The only people that stand to lose out from this are the IRA. If they were going to do it he would have disappeared and ended up in a bog in Kerry. No-one is going to notice if someone who is in hiding disappears.

What about the 'Real IRA' or other nationalist extremists who dont want to give up? They can only benefit from the IRA losing face here surely; and Im sure that they have little regard for a Special Branch/MI5 agent on the nationalists side. It looks like a win-win for them.....

Simon - The possibilities are endless - Real IRA would possibly have a motive, as would UVF/UDA/LFF,LVF, orange volunteer force, special branch and MI5. There are many many organisation that would benefit from his murder. The only organisation that wont benefit would be the IRA. Now that the rumor mill has had time to get geared up, it seems that he was about to sell his full story about his dealings with special branch to the Sunday World.
The thing about spending the last 35 years in Northern Ireland is that you learn some patterns. If the paramilitaries kill someone, they usually claim it straight away. If the have a delicate situation where they can't murder someone and claim responsibility, said person tends to have an unfortunate accident.....When the security forces kill someone they try and pin the blame somewhere else

1) go to a different country
2) live in a city where you will blend in, not somewhere in the country where newcomers attract attention
Also, I don't see how having utility supplies make you more tracable
Anyway, he wouldn't have come clean unless he had an agreement with senior IRA figures (full and frank debrief in exchange for not killing him). This killing probably came from way down the chain... after all, these are the same people who shot one of their own in a drunken brawl very recently.

OK - I'll rephrase that - he disappeared to a remote farmhouse in a remote area of a remote place in a remote corner of Ireland. The possibility of bumping into someone unexpectedly in said remote area is virtually zero. It is also home turf for some of the Sinn Fein leaders, so it is quite possible that he did have a deal with them
btw - Top Banana - who did they shoot in a drunken brawl?
