I am in a situation where I want to erect a party fence between my house and my neighbours house becuase currently its all open plan and im wanting a little privacy.

The neighbours adjoined to my house are renting and I have asked there permission to erect a fence (not sure if I actually need permission but I thought Id be polite) in which they have said fine. I was just thinking that really I need the permission of the house owner as I dont want to fall out.

So far I have spoken to the agency who she uses to rent the house but they wont give me her contact details because of the data protection act. However they will let me email them and then they pass on my details to her. Its been a good month though since I emailed and I have still heard nothing.

My Question is, is there any other way I can find out her contact details? It seems the DPA has my hands tied so far. I dont really want to put the fence up without asking.

all you need is a postcode and it will give you a register and crucially a plan in pdf format showing boundaries it only costs £4.00

Put the fence up just on your side of the boundary and there is no need to ask. Only thing would be to check your deeds to make sure fences etc are allowed.

Thanks all for the info. I know that I should be allowed to put one up because other neighbours further down the row have a fence. I think I will spend £4 and be done with it

If it's not made of razor wire, is on your land and is under 6ft like sara says there should be no problem. Easiest thing to do is check with the council planning department, if they have no issues, that's what counts.......

Be careful. Where I live there's a covenant to say it should be kept open plan. My council wanted to charge me £100+ to apply for planning permission for £75 worth of fence. I'll probably stick one up anyway and see what happens.

As a rule of thumb, if you are looking at your property from the front then the boundary to your left is yours.

I wouldn't bother with planning permission - the council will just want to take your money to improve their performance figures and boost their league table position.
