Odd for being a car enthusiast?!
Hi All
I was just wondering if there are any other professions out there were you were seen as being a bit of a misfit for enjoying cars or being accused as being a 'boy racer'?
As a scientist I have studied at a variety of different unis and worked in commercial and academic settings yet I have experienced this everywhere I have gone. None of it has been particularly nasty and some of it I'm sure have just been to wind me up but there is an element out there which consider you a real boy racer if you so much as mention an aftermarket ECU, SS exhaust or anything along those lines.
Or are they right???

I don't think I quite managed to convert them; they prefer to spend their money on booze and pizza (once a student, always a student)!! However, whenever I see them they always ask:
"How's Scooby?"

I am a teacher. The vast majority of other staff has no idea why I spend time and money on my car. (They are too busy driving mk2 fiesta's wearing tweed jackets with leather elbow pads hee hee hee). The headmaster has called me a boy racer in front of the students!!!!!
The students generally like the fact I am into cars. I frequently use them as examples in my teaching (Design Technology teacher) so they can appreciate my enthusiasm.
But you either ‘get’ cars or you don’t.

You think being classed as a 'boy racer' is odd - try being classed as a 'girl racer'! I work for a large firm of solicitors, so appreciation of nice cars goes with the turf - but usually only for the blokes!

When I was working in Derby, developing / testing Jet engines, it was almost compulsary to have an interest in cars and/or bikes - even the women too!
If two of us had to go to the outdoor test bed 20 miles away, we'd always take the Scoob!

I am a Chartered Building Surveyor. Spend most of my lunchtimes surfing the Scoobynet and Peugeot205GTI forum whilst the rest of the guys check out their fantasy football stuff! That said, one of my colleagues has a CTR and another a new Atra VXR!! When I take one of the graduate surveyors out in the car, 'the boy' as we call him, he grins from ear to ear when I floor it and he has a Scooby screen saver. The associates and direcors think I am a sad b@stard!!

I'm definately the exception rather than the rule which is odd considering the amount of time that people spend interacting with motor vehicles in some way or another.

Very unprofessional
I went to a private school, uni and work in Human Resources, which means I should be a complete w***** and drive a boring car (wouldn't want to offend by naming names, cough mundano). However I drive a wrx classic with the 5zigen juggernaut swallowing exhaust, 17" gold rims and a few other choice mods.
To me it's all about what I enjoy and top of the agenda for me is A to B with the most fun in between!
I had a job for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency for a while and at first dreaded taking my very unfriendly scoob to work, but it soon transpired that most of my colleagues loved the deep warble from the car and my department used to laugh amongst each other as they heard me arrive in the morning!

Well IT certianly has its fair share of petrol heads. In works car park, there is an RX8, 2 Scoobs (1 classic, 1 MY06) and 2 GT4's
The place I got my first real job after uni, they were a boring bunch. Had a couple of bikers but I was the only 1 with a performance ish car (205 gti)

They know precious little about their cars other than the rudimentary 'top trump' stats which they use to argue whose is more expensive. Pathetic.

I feel exactly the same way about football. I don't understand all the fuss and passion people have in this sport, but hey I guess I'm in the minority...
