If you're there over Easter you could be in for a surprise - Water festival... Was on Koh Samui for it a couple of years back - entire island, 24 hours, water fight! Has to be seen to be believed - I now understand why most people take out money on those days inside two plastic bags

The water chucking festival Songkran has already been
Go to Chatuchak market in Bangkok [at end of skytrain line]. Biggest market in world - wooden stuff is good value or maybe you will walk away with a monkey!

MBK Centre (Mah Boon Kong)
Siam Square
Chatuchak market
Patpong night market (for knockoffs and tourist kitsch, bargain heavily - offer 1/10 of the asking price to start and don't pay more than 1/3)
Pratunam market for clothes
Khao Sarn Road
Chinatown
Panthip Plaza (for IT stuff)
And more upmarket
Siam Paragon Complex (Largest shopping centre in BKK, Luxury mega-mall)
Gaysorn plaza
Emporium
And Songkran can be fun but the novelty can wear off very quickly especially after days of being soaked and covered in flour, as a foreigner you are a fair target. Stomach upsets and eye infections are common from the water being thrown at you too.

My diary wrong sorry - maybe its like Easter and TOTALLY unpredictable where we keep it!
"Songkran Festival, April 12-15, is the traditional Thai New Year. This is the time for Thais to pay homage to Buddha images, clean their houses, and sprinkle water on their elders in a show of respect. Anyone who ventures out on the streets is likely to get a thorough dousing of water, all in good fun, but also quite welcome at the peak of the hot season"
Take a mac!
