Default Naming a son after the father...?

As per the title really.

I'm curious to understand why some people (mainly Americans, it seems) think it's a good idea to name their Son/Daughter (but usually son) after themselves. I mean - they'll be taking your surname down the bloodline, why give them the same forename too?!

I'm not making a judgement on whether it's right or wrong... Has anyone on here named their son after themselves? I suppose a famous one would be good old George Bush.

Does it get confusing when it comes to opening the post or receiving phone calls?

Doesn't help getting credit either, if dads got bad credit history could cause problems for the son.

The tradition in my family is to give the father/mothers first name to the first born boy/girl as a second name. Additional boys/girls get the parents second name as their second name if that makes sense

I agree though otherwise it is very confusing !

Same here, my middle name is my Dad's first name, and most of my mate's who were first born are the same

I can see the sense in this totally. It passes down the name but avoids the confusion!

we do similar and pass on the middle names but base the first names on various TV and movie shows. So i have my dads middle name and my great grandfathers, so does my son. My other son has my grandfathers and my brothers. My 3rd son will have my wifes dads middle name. My duaghter has my mothers middle name.

All first names are then dependant on whats on TV at the time.

One of my mates married a chav bird who already had 4 kids, each one named after someone else in the family. It gets very confusing and when he got her preggers another couple of times he carried on their tradition. The even more confusing thing is that her 2 brothers and 1 sister have done the same thing, so there's 3 or 4 kids running around in the same family with the same name (although since my mate married his mrs, she's at least changed hers and the kids surname)

I think it's a crap idea personally, just name your kids what you want. Names change with the times.

Never quite got the same name as parent thing. Maybe it's some take on royalty, eg; Richard III, so they think that it's some kind of noble thing when you're James Matheson III or somesuch. I do have to laugh when they start calling them Junior

I use a similar thing myself, you'll have to meet Chuckie (from Chuckie Egg) and Lara (from Lara Croft) sometime

I wanted to name them Doom and Quake but the missus wasn't keen.

So your mum and dad were watching Winnie the Pooh at the time then?

And I doubt that's how your dad got his name either!

When I was born my dad's family wanted me named after him. He put the foot down and said "NO WAY".

Just as well for me - he was called Homer...................

Tiggs is a nickname related to surname, my first name is traditional biblical stuff which i have never given a second thought to - i dont even know why they picked it.

if i found out i was called something after a great movie from the year i was born that would be pretty cool! My duaghter has already seen topgun and loves the idea that her folks were watching that before she was born and thinking of her - gives her a sense of a time that she is too young to remember.

for example, mean streets was released around my birthday.....to be called Robert or Harvey on that basis would have been quite cool.

Just look how many Kylie's and Jason's are out there born in the early 90's after their parents spent too much time watching Neighbours.

Tradition in my family is teh males all have the same mddile inital, doesn't matter what the name is as long as it starts with M. So every male in my family has M C as their last 2 initails.

My middle name isn't the same as any one family wise, Our daughters middle name is Andrea, my other half's full name is Andrew but we didn't know we would chose a middle name, my dad's full name was Andrew aswell it was mainly after him we gave our daughter the female equivilent as he never got to see her so it was a nice thing to do for us and our daughter.

One of my boys has got my grandad's middle name, and the other has my wife's maiden name as his middle name. Naming your son after you only causes confusion later in life (as my brother is finding out...)

Jr is only used by Americans when they're the first in a line, i.e. John Smith Jr is John Smith's son. If John Smith Jr then has a son, he'd be John Smith III. Just thought I'd clear up that ugly mess.

I'm in agreement with everyone one on here it seems. It must be the ultimate in vanity to give a kid the same first name as his father. They are an individual human being got God's sake, give them their own name! Second name, no problem.

Wink

It's to compensate for their lack of heritage. By calling their sons so-and-so III, it gives the impression that yanks been around a while.

Cheers

I suppose its better to be named after your parents now at least you get a sensible name like Alan or Dave. In a few years time it will mean we will have multiple Chardonays and Britneys roaming this planet!!!
